Sunday, November 5th the Veterans Service Committee will be honoring National Veterans Remembrance Month with a Chili Cook-Off in the main dining room. Our Special Guests will be the U.S. Army Rangers and their spouses. The Army Rangers are a highly trained, rapid deployment light infantry force with specialized skills which enable them to conduct Special Ops missions, requiring some of the most rigorous training in the U.S. Military. They will be giving us a presentation on their training program at Eglin AFB and will also be the Chili Cook-Off Judges for this event.
Competition is open to all Lodge members and challenges have also been sent to all NW District Lodges who would like to compete in this event. The Entry Fee is only $15 – Entry Forms and Rules are available at the bar. If you don’t want to enter, you can still come and meet the Rangers, Eat-In for $5 and cast your vote you’re your favorite recipe. A “People’s Choice” Prize will be awarded, along with 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Awards as chosen by our Judges. So make plans to be there… we really want to show our patriotism and appreciation to the brave men and women who serve our country. And we want to honor all of our LODGE VETERANS. · ELKS National Foundation Scholarships
The schools are back in session and now is the time when many of our high school seniors are looking for scholarships to assist them with their college financial obligations. If you have a family member or know of some one looking for help, now is the time to let them know about the Elks scholarships. The Elks National Foundation provides more than $3.3 million in college scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors. The “Most Valuable Student” scholarship is open to any high school senior. The “Legacy Awards” scholarships and the “Emergency Educational Fund Grants” scholarships are available to children of Elks. The application process and deadlines vary for each program and a short summary of each follows:
o Most Valuable Student Scholarships: 500 four-year scholarships, ranging from $1,000.00 per year to $15,000.00 per year, for graduating seniors based on financial need, leadership, and scholastics.
o Legacy Awards Scholarships: One-year merit based scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks who are members in good standing. Legacy awards are for one year for $1,000.00 scholarships. The Foundation offers a total of up to 500 awards.
o Emergency Education Fund Grants Scholarships: One-year educational grants available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks. The grant is for one year and can range up to $4,000.00. The student may submit up to three annual renewal applications.
For additional information please contact me at home(243-4409) or at work(833-9525) or via e-mail me Paul L. Eubanks. This information will also be sent to the 2 high schools in our lodge area or is available on the Elks national web site. Please help get the word out as we continue to assist the youth in their future college education. I am also looking for help to assist with the Fort Walton Lodge judging in late January and also as Northwest District chairman I can use help for the district judging in early February. I can provide a training and informational package prior to judging for anyone interested in helping. I would encourage anyone involved in the educational field to get involved for a few hours to support our youth going to college. (Paul L. Eubanks, NW District Scholarship Chairman)
· Elks National Foundation
This is a friendly reminder to renew your certificates, and/or to make your pledge for this year. As of July 2006 we are at $1.86 per capita, based on a membership of 802 people. Our goal is to reach $4 per capita before March 31, 2007. If you need an application form please contact me at CLEM2256@AOL.COM, or call me at 259-8164. Thank you for your support! Kevin Clemons, House Committee Chairman
· New Hours of Operation for Lodge Lounge Starting November 1, 2006:
Monday-Friday: Noon – 10 PM
Saturday: 11 AM – 10 PM
Sunday: 9 AM – 7 PM
Depending on business, Bar Tenders have the discretion to close the lounge earlier than posted.
· C. A. R. E. Party
Scheduled for March 2007. Tickets are now available at the bar or from any lodge officer. Let's do our best to sell all 500 tickets as planned. Invite neighbors, friends and guests. Spread the word!. Our Charity Account needs the boost. If you need more tickets, please see Vicki Morgan, the Bar Tenders or any of the other lodge officers. Kevin Clemons, House Committee Chairman.
· Volunteers Needed Desperately
We desperately need volunteers to cook on Tuesday Bingo nights. We could also use volunteers on the 3rd and 4th Sunday of each month to help with breakfast. The help from volunteers reduces employee costs, which ultimately saves you money because we don’t have to raise food and beverage costs. If interested, please contact Chris Howland, Jerry Burrows or Kevin Clemons, House Committee Chairman
· Comments / Suggestions
Do you have any suggestions or comments? We want to hear what you have to say about our facilities, dining and Club. Drop a note in our suggestion box located to the left of the main entrance, or send me an e-mail to Kevin Clemons, House Committee Chairman
· Candidate:
Anyone knowing a legitimate reason why as candidate should not be approved for membership should contact Kevin Clemons at clem2256@aol.com, or call (850) 259-8164.
· Advertise in our Newsletter
I am asking all FWB Elks Lodge 1795 members to consider promoting their businesses by sponsoring a recurring advertisement in our monthly newsletter. One-time personal messages will also be considered, such as Birthday Greetings, Anniversaries and other announcements.
The small fee charged will help generate additional revenue for the Lodge. The money collected will be used to improve the newsletter and for other continuing projects.
Feel free to call or fax me at 850-678-6818 or send email to Keith Goldsmith, News Editor, if you are interested in supporting your Lodge and the newsletter by purchasing advertising.
· Deadline For The October 2006 Newsletter
Deadline for the October 2006 Newsletter will be September 15th. Please submit all articles (if possible) in MS Word, Word Perfect, ASCII or E-Mail to help reduce typing time. Send your inputs to Keith Goldsmith, News Editor. Articles may still be sent to me directly or dropped off with the Lodge Secretary, David Cagle or left at the bar for pick up. Disks will be returned or if one is needed please let me know.
· Did You Win A Free Dinner For Two At The Lodge?
Find your membership number and the words “DINNER HUNT” in this months bulletin and you are a WINNER. Come to the Lodge and ask the bartender for your DINNER HUNT ticket! This ticket gets you dinner for two at the Lodge, excluding drinks and gratuity. It’s easy to find this month but watch out – it’s going to get harder to find in the following months. You will have to read the whole LODGE BULLETIN every month and look for your membership ID number to see if you won the DINNER HUNT. And that’s a good thing… So, do you know your membership number..?
