Colonial Times

People began to wonder whether the world was round or flat. For centuries people had argued about this. Finally, people began to explore. In great ships, they left harbors in Europe and sailed out into mysterious seas. They believed there might be wild beasts lurking out in the water somewhere.

Sailors landed in different parts of the world, China, India, and even the Americas. They discovered lands and peoples that no one knew existed. These Europeans began taking over these lands, moving the native people and starting new colonies.

Many people in Europe were unhappy with the government. The kings and queens were forcing them to be a certain Religion. One king even started his own religion and forced everyone to join it. Many of the people were angered by this and wanted to leave. These were the people who began colonizing the New World.

The colonists lived under British rule for hundreds of years. They built houses and communities. They made clothing and farmed and hunted for their food. They educated their children either at home or in colonial schools.
