Although often criticized for being too unrealistically optimistic about the necessities of  tension, peace advocates during the Cold War were necessities themselves.  It is inevitable that separate nations will have clashing viewpoints and ideas that often result in violence.  However, the success of peace movements in Europe and Asia proved that something can be done to avoid all-out warfare.  It is true that there can never be an answer to complete annihilation of conflict, but by striving for this ultimate state, a moderate agreement can be achieved.  The peace movements of the Cold War show that all that needs to be done is to give peace a chance.
