Pro-Life Issues

There is a growing misconception in our secularized society that the Church's teachings on issues such as abortion, contraception, and euthanasia have either changed or that at least the Church has grown more tolerant of these things. Nothing could be further from the truth. First off, the Church doesn't change its teachings on matters of faith and morals. Disciplinary practices (such as priestly celibacy) can be changed at the discretion of the Pope, but teachings regarding matters of faith and morals were teachings that came from Christ himself, and the Church readily acknowledges that it does not have the power to change Christ's teachings. Secondly, there is no such thing as a "pro-choice Catholic." There might be people who claim to be Catholic who support abortion, but you can rest assured that such people are not practicing Catholics, and certainly cannot speak for the Church or any adherent to its teachings. Stemming from Christ's teachings concerning the dignity of life and of the human person, the Church has consistently and adamantly maintained that any act that destroys human life or prevents its conception is a grave moral evil. Even the Church's teachings on capital punishment, just war, and self-defense reflect this, recognizing that such measures become necessary only when no other viable options are available and it is certain that by not resorting to these measures a graver harm could beset humanity.
