The town has been in existence since the 1830s. The whole town is now a state park. Most of it has been restored to its 1860 appearance...Stage Depot, blacksmith shop who invented the Bowie knife, Capitol building, court house, schoolhouse, jail, Churches, Gin and many old houses. The oldest magnolia tree in the world grows there. Many Confederate soldiers are buried there who died from sickness or battles. In the pioneer cemetery there are soldiers from the Revolutionary War!
