Presentation The Dolphin Tree ...Symbol of the Earth in the New Millennium! An initiative for the rescue of planet Earth The
Dolphin Tree is a proposal from a venezuelan N.G.O which seeks to
establish an universally acknowledged “Symbol
of the Earth”. We hope recognition of this symbol will serve a
double purpose: raise public awareness and serve as an independent
fundraiser for environmental organizations worldwide. To this day, we have
symbols which represent just about everything - from cancer to fertility -
but we don´t have a symbol for the Earth, the planet on which we live and
on which we depend for our own survival. The
pressure which is made to bear on our natural resources is seriously
jeopardizing the well-being of future generations. Global warming, the
damage to the ozone layer, deforestation and desertification, are all
advancing. Our waterways are either drying up or becoming unfit for life,
and even the air we breathe becomes
increasingly toxic. Despite significant efforts to revert these tendencies,
mankind doesn´t seem sufficiently aware of the risks involved or
motivated enough to take these threats seriously. We believe our proposal
can make a difference. To find out why, go to: The
Dolphin Tree - A Symbol for
the Earth in the New Millennium. The
Dolphin Tree …A symbol for the Earth In
the New Millennium! A
few years ago, while I walked along a jungle stream in Venezuela, a sudden
explosion above my head startled me. As I looked towards the top of the
giant thorny trees (Hura Crepitans) under which I was walking, a shower
of wooden shells and seeds fell all around me. Picking up one of these
seed casings, I was struck by something unusual and rather magical:
they matched - almost exactly - the shape of a dolphin! Was
nature trying to tell me something? After
all, I reasoned, dolphins are among mankind´s most beloved creatures. Not
only that, but coming from the oceans, thay represent one of the world´s
main ecosystems. The oceans, along with the rain forests (habitat of
the Dolphin Tree), are considered the complementary “lungs” of the
planet. The message, at least to me, was clear: the “Symbol of the
Earth” already existed. All I had to do
was to let the world know about it! Continue
with ...“The Dolphin Tree
Foundation” The
Dolphin Tree Foundation Fueled
by this inspiration I started the Dolphin Tree Foundation, a non-profit
organization which seeks international recognition of these shells as
“Symbol of the Earth”. We are presently collecting 250.000
endorsements in order to declare them “Venezuelan Symbol of the
Environment”. Once this is accomplished, we will launch a worldwide
appeal to persuade the United Nations to institutionalize them as the
official “Symbol of the Earth”. The
idea - although apparently quite simple - has profound implications: 1.-
It will serve to focus local and international attention on
environmental issues in the coming millennium 2.-
It
has immense potencial as a source of independent income for the
environmental movement worldwide 3.-
It will become a source of employment to hundreds of poor people in our
country We
need the participation of ecological organizations to ensure that the
funds generated are truly directed to the rescue of our planet. The
problem is - you guessed it - we have meagre resources! So, if you think
this is a worthwhile endeavor, and would like to help us, here is what you
can do: Turn
