Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 18:47:51 EDTfirst of all - our son is not one of the ones you mentioned - you know as well as we do that 90% of the inmates are there because of drug purchases, some of them from under cover cops for a lousy $10 of marijuana. Some of them for driving without a license. So don't go stating that all inmates are violent unless you know who you are talking about. They need rehabilitation, not incarceration. One thing about our son just because he is wearing blue, does not make him a liar. That is how he got in trouble in the first place - he told the truth - Just because you are wearing a uniform doesn't make you God. You cannot pass judgment. I know who and what I am talking about or I wouldn't be doing so.
Well, , let's see where do I begin. Your statement about most inmates being in prison for small amounts of drugs is so far from the truth. Yes, while there may be one or two that may have committed drug offenses, the majority of these 1200 plus prisoners that we have here are predators. They have preyed on the weak and the small all their lives. They don't know any other way of surviving other than stealing , robbing, selling drugs etc. I have worked in the florida prison system for over eight years, and I cannot count the number of times that inmates have told me before they went home, "Why should I go work a real job for 7-8 dollars an hour, when I can sell drugs and make 1,000 a week. So coming to prison did not rehabilitate them as you say. Many states gave up on rehabalitation because it does not work. [sic...I had to stop laughing here in order to read on. kl]
The only thing that people learn when they come to prison, is how to be a better criminal and not get caught next time they are out selling drugs, raping children and car jacking and putting fear into the lives of normal hardworking people of the state of florida. Tonight you can rest peacefully knowing that the Department of Corrections has professionals on duty 24 hours a day to protect you from these predators.
I was curious about Sarge's denial that drug law offenders were any significant part of the prison population. That clashes with everything I've studied from the Justice Department that tells me a highly significant number of the two million prisoners are drug law offenders, particularly of those incarcerated in the last 10 years.
So, I went to the DOC website and asked for all the inmates at Wakulla serving time for drug offenses. The list was immense, so I settled for the first three letters of the alphabet, A, B, and C. There were 129 names beginning with one of those three initials, A, B, or C who were at Wakulla on drug offenses.
Then I did the same thing for murderers at Wakulla. There were 32 listed with these initials. And when I checked "Other Violent Crimes" I got 13 more violent people, a total of 45 there for violence versus 129 there for drug crimes.
I do not know how the DOC chooses to classify people, but it appears that Sarge is wrong on this one.
