OBSERVATIONS ON
SERGEANT ALBERT AGERTON

Wakulla CI

Sergeant Agerton has been named as Archie Davis's main tormentor and possible murderer.  Agerton is known as the "Toy Soldier" because, despite only handling the military for less than a month and a half, he lives his childhood dream of being a real soldier at Wakulla CI.

Chaplain Hope described Agerton as having "Military bearing", doesn't take any guff from the prisoners, expects to be obeyed immediately.  The prisoners call him "The Toy Soldier".

It was Agerton who, on the day Archie Davis died, told him, "This is the day you die, Davis".  When Archie Davis began reciting bible verses, "Strive, O Lord, with those who strive against me; fight against those who fight me. Grasp shield and buckler, and rise up to help me." [Psalm 35], Agerton was the one who is reported to have said, "That won't do you any good now, Davis.  Today you die."

On the day of Archie Davis' death, after 10 days of torture involving Agerton, it is reported that Agerton led the invasion into Archie Davis' cell holding a long, heavy, "police-style" flashlight.  It is Agerton who was reported to have "kicked a sheet into Davis' cell, like an afterthought", the sheet Archie Davis supposedly, according to DOC authorities, 'hung himself' with.

It is reported that Captain Hemphill gave the orders that Agerton et al carried out in the alleged 10 days of torture just prior to the murder of Archie Davis.  At this time it is 'rumored' that Hemphill and Agerton were involved in drug running into the prison and that Archie Davis' efforts to tell outsiders about the drug ring is what got him killed.

My take is this 30 year old man was temporary and unstable, weak, maybe spoiled, made excuses for himself, maybe using little things to explain big failures (like health as an excuse to drop out of things often) until he found the DOC. He seemed like he was going nowhere until he found his niche at Wakulla. Now they say he has "military bearing" (he spent a little over a month in the military).

His referrals come from A friend ("if he wants something, Randy will find some way of obtaining it." "There is always purpose behind his actions." "He cannot abide people who stand behind enviable facades to obtain less than noble purposes.");

 A roommate ("unserving loyalty and dedication to his friends.");

Supervisor (Lt at Liberty CI where Agerton worked for maybe a week) ("extremely effective officer.");

An Instructer (At 'Lively Corrections Academy' where he trained for 5 months) ("especially impressive student." "prepared, participated, personal appearance excellent");

And A Family Friend ("He is very aware of the value of life" "As a child, Randy was always interested in the military lifestyle and the regimentation that goes with it.")

He has some use of force stuff,  some failures and flaws for such an 'impressive student' and 'effective officer'.

1. "Due to not participating in Emergency Response Team Tryouts, you have been removed from the team. Removal from the ER Team constitutes the return of all equipment issued to you (ie pagers).

July 28, 1998 SIGNED BY COL MORGAN

2. "During the period of April 17, 2001, through August 25, 2001, you had a total of four unscheduled absences, two of which were in conjunction with your regular off duty days. Additionally you were tardy on eight occasions. There appears to be a pattern to your absences that needs to be eliminated. We consider this number of absences in this time frame to reflect an abuse of your sick leave privileges. Please make every effort to reduce the number of unscheduled absences from duty. Your attendance will be closely monitored and any further violation will result in more severe corrective action."

11/7/01 SIGNED BY CAPTAIN HEMPHILL but from COLONEL COLSON.

I haven't put my finger on it yet, but something bothers me about this young man's psychological mindset.  His childhood dreams of being a military man were given up so easily once he was in the military, but he continues to play the role.  I suspect something is seriously wrong with this 'Toy Soldier'.
