NEED VERIFICATION: Mar 8, 2006: I received some information last night and I thought I'd pass it on to you to check out. I heard that there is an investigation going on at Lawtey and it's about a guard who just killed an inmate. I knew it's true because this inspector friend of mine is the one investigating it.

Two female Correctional Officers are claiming they worked in an environment where female subordinates are pressured to perform sexual acts in order to move up. Correctional Officer Karen Jones and Lieutenant Felecia Seulter are suing the Florida Department of Corrections for civil rights violations. "I was specifically told that if I did not perform sex acts that I was not going to be aloud to return to the day shift," says Jones. She claims the comment came from the highest-ranking officer at Lawtey Correction Institution. The two women say they got little support when the incidences were reported. "Comments from Supervisors would be they're just boys and it was juvenile behavior," says Seulter who left DOC due to emotional distress. "Sexual Discrimination is not tolerated at the Department of Corrections," says Sterling Ivey, DOC Spokesperson. Ivey says they will fight the lawsuit filed against them.
The department's response to the plight of any semi-attractive female employee in their 'guard's' world is so very typical: Deny, deny, deny. This is why so many people have lost so much respect for the DoC. They refuse to corral the criminals in uniforms, which damages the reputation of the entire system. Kay Lee

In the MTWT Guestbook on this website a female officer responded to the news of the Lawtey sexual harassment lawsuit with the following statement:"Gotta love that lawsuit from the 2 females....."oh--poor us, we screwed at work to get ahead...and it wasn't our faults......." LMAO. Im a female c.o., Ive delt with "sexual harassment" at work,,,,,but this is friggin crazy, those chicks should just leave it alone....Ive got $100 that says one was married, if not both, and thats why they came forward. Boo freaking who."
My response to this 'officer's' response is shock. Not only that she is female with no sympathy for a situation she knows exists, but she seems to have forgotten that Sexual Harassment is against the law. Officers are supposed to represent the law and she says, "Leave it alone"? I can't believe such total lack of regard for the law exists within the legal system, of which this officer is supposed to be a part.
The department (and too many of their employee's) response to the plight of any (in this case attractive female) employee reporting misdeeds in their (in this case male) 'guard's' world is so very typical: Deny, deny, deny.
The females take the same risks as the men (re Darla Lathrem killed at Charlotte CI with no backup), yet illegal harassment against them is a common and unbridled occurance in the prisons and the position is that they are supposed to ignore it?
Whenever misbehavior in the department comes to light, the first thing guards (not C/Os - guards) do is start slamming the messenger.
Whenever anyone reports anything wrong in the department, be they employees, ex-employees, inmates, families, even reporters and lawyers, the first thing we all hear is "Everybody's a liar"; Yeah, right: everybody but the 'guards'!
This is why so many people have lost so much respect for the DoC. James Crosby is doing the same thing Michael Moore did for so many years. Helping bad people COVER UP bad deeds.
It doesn't seem to matter who runs the Florida Department of "Corrections", up to this point they have refused to acknowledge, let alone corral, the criminals in uniform, which damages the reputation of the entire system and jeopardizes the safety of officers, inmates, and the public at large.
The professionals, including the women, deserve better than that.Visualizing Professionalism

The inmates at Lawtey were told tonight that their camp is being converted into a faith-based camp 'immediately'. Each inmate is to be polled tonight as to whether they wish to remain at Lawtey. This "polling" also took place approximately 3 months ago. At that time more than 500 inmates did not want to stay at Lawtey if it was to become designated as "faith based". They were told tonight that if they "choose" {like there is really an option} to transfer the transfers 'could' occur within the next 3 to 7 days.

Historical Information: This facility was established in 1973 as a community vocational center housing work release inmates. In 1977 it was converted to a major institution housing adult male inmates. It is designated to house minimum, medium custody and all medical grade inmates. Lawtey C.I. provides academic, vocational and self-betterment programs.

Directions: From North: Take I-10 to Baldwin exit. Travel US-301 south approximately 18 miles to Lawtey. Turn left at red light. Go 2 blocks and turn right on CR-200-B. Institution is approximately 1 mile.
