IMPROVEMENTS AT GULF CI
Friday, January 14, 2005Subject: Mail at Gulf CIYou know I have been following your sight over and over and before I knew it my nightmare came true. My dear hubby went to Gulf... yes NO mail problems. Hopefully the issue is resolved. The guards are AWESOME at visits! I am amazed. It is a different world from his past camps I must say! This is the best we have had it by far! I love the guards, they treat us with TRUE respect and on behalf of that I would like to give special recognition to
CO Barnes. She is a doll. Gets us right in, gives us so much freedom understanding we ARE human after all. Once I learn other names I will let you know. But truly my hubby has been to 4 camps and this is FAR above all the others!!!
Thank You

I did receive very good comments from my son regarding Sgt. White. She had helped him get his canteen supplies when the canteen person messed up his order. To my son's amazement, Sgt. White went out of her way to help him get the supplies he needed.
Kudos for Sgt White.
WE ARE PLEASED TO AWARD BOTH THE MEDICAL STAFF AT GULF CI and SGT WHITE WITH THE MTWT GOLD STAR AWARD FOR THEIR PROFESSIONALISM!
Thank you all for a job well done!

Subject: A Good Officer
Dear Kay
Here is an officer that the prisoners at Gulf C.I. and I would like to Nominate for a Gold Star -
Officer Goodwin
She is deeply appreciated for her professionalism and courtesy shown to the prisoners there. She generally treats them equitably and her Christian attitudes come through in her conversations and behavior in the dorms and on the compound. She is a fine example of an officer who can and will influence prisoners to be better persons.
Thank you Mrs. G!

Only by letting the public know, can we force them to either buy toilet paper or explain why. If you can't take care of even their toilet paper needs, you shouldn't be mass incarcerating people!

I cannot release my name nor the inmate's name, for fear of retaliation. For now we will call him "T". "T" is incarcerated at Gulf C.I.
I have read some of the letters in you web site. I agree, not only are the inmates' victims, but so are the families. I have heard appalling accounts of verbal, physical, and emotional abuse. There are two counts I would like to bring to someone's attention.
"T" was mandated to a drug/alcohol program- (Be reminded, he is not incarcerated on drug charges.) He is periodically drug tested, on any day at any hour. If he does not urinate within 60 minutes, he gets something like 60 days in "the BOX" and loses 80 days gain time.
On one occasion he could not urinate without soiling himself. With 5 minutes to go, he proceeded to urinate in the "cup" and soil himself.
He has been tested at least 9 times, and passed all times.
Now the program funding is being pulled, being almost completed, he will not receive his certificate. After all of the humiliation he will not be graduating the program with less than a month to go.
The latest humiliation is that the dorm was out of toilet paper for 2 or 3 days. What is the problem that the DOC cannot supply inmates with toilet paper. The next thing you know, they will have to use their canteen for tp. For those who do not have anyone on the outside to supply them with canteen money are out of luck I suppose.
These men and woman are people, not pets, and deserve a little humility. I do not treat my dogs with so little care and respect.
Please post what you can of my letter. I want people to know what is going on, I just do not want to put him in jeopardy. He's only got a few months left. By the way, I spoke to him last night, there is still no tp.
Thank you for being out there for us, the inmates are not the only victims of this system. It is nice to have a sounding board where something may be accomplished.
I have emailed the work release people twice requesting information, with no response, I wrote you one letter and got an immediate response. What is wrong with this picture?
Thank You Again for listening.

THREE GUARDS FIRED FOR ABUSE OF PRISONER
December 15, 2003
Inmates in Y dorm (which is confinement) have had to endure:
1 Last three showers have been cold water. Some inmates refused to shower
They complained and were told "tough stuff" by an Officer HORNE
2) Guards refuse to close the vents to the cells so they are freezing
to death. There appears to be no heat in this building.
3) Guards are walking around with heavy jackets
40 Inmates are not allowed to have their sweat shirts or anything to
keep them warm
4) Last few days alone the temperature has dipped to about mid to
upper 30- 40's
Because of the food situation, these guys have NO BODY fat so they
have no insulation. What can anyone do about this???????????""Yes, in fact it's freezing out there right now. If those inmates don't have any heat, they have to be cold. It warmed up yesterday afternoon, but today it's even cold inside because I turned the heat down low last night. Believe me, it's been turned up this morning. I did get a letter from XXX yesterday, and I answered it this morning. Yes, he's cold, and he was looking forward to getting a sweatshirt. "
"My son purchased his own sweatshirt but since he is in dr confinement he is not allowed access to it I do not know what else to say INHUMANE is a nice word for this."
"This is definitely inhumane treatment of our loved ones.
The weather forecast at Gulf for the next few days is: (moderate)
TODAY/MONDAY Mostly Clear
High: 63
Low: 44
TUESDAY PM Showers
High: 73
Low: 43
WEDNESDAY Mostly Sunny/Wind
High: 55
Low: 35
THURSDAY Sunny
High: 61
Low: 39
FRIDAY Sunny
High: 62
Low: 40One thing about our weather forecasts. When they predict it will be warm, it's cold; and when they predict it will be warm, it's cold. I think the forecast is mostly for our Canadian friends who come here in the winter.
"I would love to give the guards wearing the jackets a nice cold shower. I still do not understand why they practically shave their heads, and then take away the knit caps that used to be standard issue. The jackets the inmates get are cotton on a cotton lining, if your lucky enough to get a newer jacket with the lining intact. Then, to deprive them of heat and the warmer clothing they do have is definitely torture. I will do my best, no names."
"Hope your efforts reap rewards in the way of heat. I can try to call the Chaplain's Office again, but so far there's never anyone there; and of course they have no answering machine. I would email the superintendent, you can find his email on the doc file."
SOMETHING MUST HAVE WORKED. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM MY SON TODAY. HE SAID HE HAD A HOT SHOWER ON Monday and the vents were closed and the heat was on. He said a major walked through and used some profanity about the H20 and heat. He heard the guards talking and they said "well these guys might get hot showers tonight but next shower they will be cold." One inmate when the chaplain came by told him what the guards had said and asked him to relate the message to the Major and ask him to do a walk through when showers are to be given. We shall see.
Glad to hear the guys got a hot shower and that the heat is now on. Hope the major will continue to monitor this situation and keep an eye on these errant guards.
More on Gulf CI coming soon!
