NEW PROJECT
Watching the Leaders
Feb 10, 2006 - James Crosby is no longer Secretary of the FDOC. He is now serving time in a federal prison.
We now have a new Secretary of 'Corrections'. James McDonough is an old military man, which might be just what the department needs right now. Therefore, I want to give him a chance, but also keep my eyes and ears open to be able to evaluate him accurately. Please keep me up to date on his changes.
Jan 16, 2008 - Although he made great headway, James McDonough is no longer Secretary of the FDOC. New governor Charlie Crist has appointed ex-Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary Walt McNeil to take over the Department of Corrections.

Subject: Site feedback and suggestionInteresting web site. As an ex correctional officer I think you are doing the right thing. Actually, let me put that another way; as a human being I think you are doing the right thing, the CO in me is pissed off at the very notion. Funny how hard that stuff dies even after 18 years away from that world.
...yes I grant permission [to use onsite]. Good luck with your work.Regards, Dave

For The Staff of the DOC
Everybody needs to be heard, and this is the area I have provided for and about the employees and ex-employees of the DOC. If you want to report conditions or express your opinion, or just hammer on the "all inmates are liars" thing, this is your arena. Kay Lee
NOTE: On this site, I put quotation marks around the word 'Correctional', not because the officer in question is not a real C/O, but because 'corrections' is not the proper word when no correction or rehabilitation is happening. That is the result of mass incarceration due to the drug war, the quality of people the department has to hire to maintain staff for the influx, bad leadership in the state of Florida, and most especially, those who deny reform is needed.
The issue under discussion here is: Although the DOC denies it, there are two kinds of people in their employment: There are real 'Correctional' Officers and then there are guards.
The question is, How Do You Tell The Difference?
Putting a uniform on anyone gives the viewer the illusion of professionalism. Sometimes it's hard for people to see the person inside the uniform. It is my full intention to let the contributors to this page present themselves so that you can determine for yourself what professionalism in uniform means and whether we should be demanding it.
PROFESSIONALS ADDRESS THE CONFLICT
THE WARDEN'S RULE
944.14 Supervision of correctional institutions; enforcement of orders and regulations.--Subject to the orders, policies, and regulations established by the department, it shall be the duty of the wardens to supervise the government, discipline, and policy of the state correctional institutions, and to enforce all orders, rules and regulations.

PRISON ETHICS and The Code of Silence
There are Correctional Officers and then there are plain old guards.
The Officers have the ability to follow the rules and yet remember they are keepers of human beings. The guards have forgotten that God loves the inmate too. In fact, I believe they've forgotten God, for no one could believe in a supreme creator and risk the wrath of the one who said, "What you do unto the least of them, you do unto me."
There are THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE INDIFFERENT.
You'll see the difference in these articles and letters.
THE CORRECTIONAL OFFICER
|
The Correctional Officer stood and faced his God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, Correctional Officer. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other check? To my church have you been true?" The Correctional Officer squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord I guess I ain't,
because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint. |

This is a lovely poem submitted by a C/O, but don't forget, God will first ask how you treated your fellow man, for they are far more precious to Him than money or overtime. Kay Lee

ADVICE TO THOSE STANDING BY LOVED ONES:
"I am an ex-employee of the DOC and am actually ashamed to say so but learned a valuable lesson about the kind of people we have running our prison system. My advise to [to family members] is not take no for an answer from anyone. You demand in letters, by phone, by fax, by any means necessary to have you [loved ones] put in a safe place away from the gangs. It can be done so don't let any of them tell you it can't. Inmates are moved every single day for any number of reasons and this reason doesn't make it because it for the most part don't matter to the people working it. During my time with DOC I often wondered what some of these people would do or how different they would react if it were there child or Mom or Dad. It is sad to say some would act no different but most would be doing exactly what you [need to be] doing. You don't let them get to you and you fight with all you have to fight with, for your [loved one]. He don't deserve what he is getting in there no matter what he did to get the sentence he got. No one deserves the treatment that is dealt behind those gates. I am ashamed that I can't do more to change what I know to be true. My prayers are with you and your family.: ace2@atlantic.net
MICHAEL MOORE'S LAST LIE(S)
The violence continues...
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
This sign celebrated guards in Bradford County, home of several prisons. But they forgot, God Loves the Prisoners too...
Over two years ago nine big guards handcuffed a skinny little prisoner and beat him nearly to death, then waited for him to die before calling in help. Their excuse? "He did it to himself." The church sign went up immediately after the crime. The guard mentality of the area, "All inmates are liars", will make it difficult to have a fair trial in Starke.
Jury Selection for the trial of three of the guards accused of Frank Valdes' murder began on October 12th, 2001 at the Bradford County CourthouseUPDATE: December 2001
VALDES TRIAL BEING MOVED OUT OF BRADFORD COUNTY!
It was impossible to find a fair and impartial jury in the tiny prison town of Starke, just as we said. The move may not serve justice though, as Gainesville is right up the road from the scene of the crime.

TO THE READERS OF THIS WEBSITE:
NOTE: This is not a child's site. I advise parental explanations should a child view it. I would like to make it clear to those reading these words that in no way should anyone interpret this site as trying to interfere with the operation of any institution, facility or agency of the U.S. Government or of any state of the United States. The information on these pages is not intended to disrupt the smooth, lawful running of prison facilities, but to force the true costs of the incarceration of over 2 million people to be brought to light.
I have always adhered to the teachings of Gandhi and fully encourage non-violent, non-acceptance of immoral incarceration. I absolutely believe that if a peaceful non-acquiescence was to take place, the results would be phenomenal.
