4/17/2007 "Miss Lee, Captain P. Cage from Everglades CI has been promoted to Major at the Loxahatchee Road Prison. Miss Lee as you know majors are now able to be duty wardens after hours, weekends, and on holidays: This is bad news for inmates in confinement because Captain Cage loves to use chemical agents, and now he gets to authorize its use. So please put this up on your site so that families of inmates at Glades CI may be warned."
MULTIPLE DEATHS REPORTED AT GLADES CI
Glades CI is quietly dirty - I'm not just talking about the drinking water. I mean dirty as in harsh and unfair and having it's share of errant guards. But the problem I'm addressing is a recent development possibly related to Aramark.
It has been reported that in the last four weeks (today's April 12th, 2005), 6 men have died at Glades. Medical blames it on Aramark... Aramark blames it on Medical, but whoever is at fault, the deaths are being kept quiet. Not a word about who or why. We want to know the details.
Besides the normal reports of men losing tremendous amounts of weight at Glades, there's these reports of sudden deaths that the FDOC has not talked about.
"We know just 4 weeks ago this coming Saturday, an older inmate was begging to retrieve his Nitroglycerin while an unhelpful guard refused to let him enter the building from the rec yard. As the door was finally opened to him, he dropped dead just inside the threshold. The visitors saw the ambulance go for him at the back of the camp. We know he had previous medical problems because of his medication. We could blame the guard, but what's the point? The point is this is too many deaths in too short a time.
"We also know another dead inmate who was over 40 with no prior medical problems, had just arrived at Glades, went to his first meal(?) and dropped dead on his way back to the dorm.
"As far as we know the others had no medical problems, were under 40, and died suddenly with bloated stomachs."
Anyone who knows anything about the Glade CI deaths, Please contact me ASAP.

"That [Johnny Jones' report] is really unusual. I find it really hard to believe this guy! Too much happened and yes there were 6 deaths. I don't buy it!" KV et al
NOTE: While it is true that some inmates will occationally 'see it' as guards want them to see it in exchange for extra canteen or some other minor reward - or to avoid a punishment, we cannot yet say whether or not that is the case here. MTWT continues to look for more reports.

Two Florida corrections officers diagnosed with tuberculosis
Glades CI, Visitation Cancelled, Quarantine
University of Florida College of Medicine / Shands Health Care May, 2003
"Tuberculosis is the most common fatal infectious disease in the world today. Concurrent infection with HIV complicates the management and increases the mortality of both diseases."Finding two C/Os in the same facility who have any contagious disease is scary, but it is greatly frustrating to know how many thousands of prisoners in Florida have contagious diseases and how little attention the administration, staff, health departments or the public gives the problem. I have long asked officers if they didn't have even a little fear that the diseases uncared for in prison would go home with them. They haven't shown a great deal of concern. But like these officers, all of us will pay sooner or later in one way or another for not having taken better care of the people in prison. Kay Lee

BELLE GLADE, Fla. - Two guards at Glades Correctional Institution have active cases of tuberculosis, a state prison official said Friday, leading authorities to essentially quarantine the inmates there for the weekend.
None of the nearly 1,000 inmates at the medium security prison in western Palm Beach County has been confirmed to have the disease, said Department of Corrections spokesman Sterling Ivey. He said all inmates and workers at the prison are being tested by the county's health department.
"There will be no movement of inmates (in to) or out of the prison," Ivey said. "We're also going to have to cancel visitation for the weekend."
Ivey said he didn't know the conditions of the two corrections officers who were diagnosed with TB or whether they were hospitalized.
The World Health Organization reports that the level of tuberculosis in prisons around the world may be as much as 100 times higher than that of the rest of the population.
Tuberculosis in the United States has generally been on a marked decline for years. A total of 14,871 cases of active TB were reported in 2003, a 1.9 percent drop from the previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Foreign-born residents account for the greatest proportion of U.S. cases - 53 percent

You are reporting an inaccuracy in this report, the officer in question was a deputy for the Glades County Sheriff Dept. not a C/O for Glades CI. Glades CI is located in Belle Glade, FL. This Officer worked for GCSO in Moore Haven FL.

GLADE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE
WATER TREATMENT PLANT
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Laboratory analyses can indicate if drinking water samples from the water treatment plant of the institution contain a concentration of Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) higher than what is allowed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The drinking water standard for TTHMs is 0.100 mg/L
SITUATION:
"I wrote about the water situation at Glades Correctional Institution before. The water is undrinkable. In the prisoners quarters according to the prisoners, there are signs to boil the water before drinking, that is impossible. There are no drinking fountains in the visitors park. If you want water you must buy it. I send my son extra money to buy water to drink. Can anything be done about this?"
