Subject: FL annual report budget

I have found your site for the Florida budget
http://www.dc.state.fl.us/pub/compass/0201/3.html

Do you know that it currently costs $49.75 a day to keep an inmate in prison in Florida? Have you ever wondered how many offenders are in prison on drug charges? Want to know how many women are serving time? These questions and more are answered in the 2000-2001 Annual Report now available on the Department of Corrections web site at www.dc.state.fl.us.

"Deb" in Florida
dtuffree@actionnet.net

Please note that the  $49.75 per day includes about $3.07 for food and the cost of their medical care and, even though the prisoners are paying $4 per visit to see a doctor.  The Annual Report is well worth the length of time it takes to read. Every family member of a FL inmate should read it.  Being informed is being empowered.

Hello,

I've found this to be particularly enlightening. Its a state publication for the employees of DOC. Among other things you'll find "ASSAULT ALERT" which tells of the inmates who've "assualted" DOC guards.

Michael Moore [ex-DOC Sec as of 1-2003] also has a letter in each...and in a previous issue the new hand scan is described.

Happy reading,
Betty (FL)

JOBS FOR THE PRISONERS

Are you aware that the Florida PRIDE is a multi-million dollar industry?
I copied and pasted it directly from the Florida DOC website:

Inmate Workers Generate Revenue

In FY 2000 PRIDE trained 4,684 inmates who worked 4.2 million hours in 55 diverse industries, farms and operations located in 20 correctional institutions. Many of these inmates were trained in modern high technology trades in the areas of print and digital information, garments and apparel, furniture manufacturing, vehicle renovation, metal fabrication, optical, and many more. Inmate workers produced thousands of products with sales totaling over $93.7 million, of which $4.5 million was provided back to the state, including inmates wages totaling $1.8 million. The remainder of funds paid for room and board, victim restitution, crime compensation as well as inmate transition and support services. PRIDE receives no state funds or appropriations to operate these industries.

For more information type in this url:
http://www.dc.state.fl.us/pub/annual/0001/pride.html

and this is the P.R.I.D.E. Enterprises website:
http://www.pridefl.com/

P.R.I.D.E. works with the DOC like a temp agency.
The companies who use prison labor pay the state a dollar price for an inmate's labor.  The state pays the prisoner pennies and keeps the rest.

It amazes me that the Florida DOC has cut so many programs when the PRIDE system returns $4.5 MILLION to the state every year (and growing).

Sure makes a thinking person wonder...
