Miss Lee as you know majors are now able to be duty wardens after hours, weekends, and on holidays: This is bad news for inmates in confinement because Captain Cage loves to use chemical agents, and now he gets to authorize its use. So please put this up on your site so that families of inmates at Glades CI may be warned."

Sergeant T. Linero really needs to be placed on your errant guard list. Last month there was a fight on the compound in front of Captain Cage's office. Sergeant Linero pulled them apart, handcuffed the gay inmate, threw him to the ground and then proceeded to kick him in the head. Then just to make sure he was in the clear, he called Sergeant Davis in the control room to make sure it had not been caught on camera.

MTWT GOLD STAR NOMINATION

Some news and a question for you

When visiting Everglades the guard at the front gate was so nice, I always looked forward to seeing him.  He was the one bright spot in such a drab place.  I promised myself I was going to get his name this week so I could submit his name for one of your stars.  He was wonderful with the visitors (always had a smile), was always respectful and extremely helpful.  My son said he was a 'really cool guy' ...made light/jokes with the convicts all the time.  All the convicts really liked him.

Saturday (yesterday Aug 28) when I went to visit  I was surprised to find he wasn't there.  I asked the girl who was there where he was and was informed he was on vacation... a 3 month vacation.  Kay, do you know the significance of this?

Re: EVERGLADES GOLD STAR

I really don't know the significance in his case, but a three month 'vacation' sounds a bit like the three month 'time out' that is so common where officers get transferred someplace out of the way like a gun tower.  Sometimes it is punishment, sometimes more like vacation when it's best they just disappear for awhile. I will put up your nomination for the Gold Star anyway.  He'll know who he is. Sometimes they contact me after seeing the site.  Wouldn't that be great, to actually be able to ask him what happened? Kay Lee

Ok, yes please award him with a star as many people have commented on how nice he is.  Also, as South Florida is a melting pot, he spoke 3 languages which accommodated most visitors. ...sign me concerned mother of an inmate.
Therefore, MTWT is honored to present the Gold Star of Professionalism and Humanity to this Anonymous but appreciated  Human Being, who also happens to be a prison worker.  We hope all is well with him.

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

According to my son, yes. A Gold Star for Assistant Warden Colson at Everglades. Although our visit was cut short by 1 hour, it was better than no visit at all.  I didn't hear any complaints...*LOL*

During our visit Assistant Warden Colson had the occasion to walk through the outdoor visitation area where we were seated.  My son commented that AW Colson is a very good person, very decent guy.  I could see and hear the respect in my son's face/voice.

Since "praise" for employees of Florida DOC is such a rariety, I thought this should be brought to your attention as there never seems to be enough of it.

My son was in much better spirits this past Saturday.  He's been locked away for 3 years.  There is hope, however.  Through a paralegal friend locked away with him, there is a new case, State of Florida vs. Otis Washington, which gives us hope.

Washington was sentenced in the same courtroom, by the same judge as my son.  It seems this ROC (Repeat Offenders Court) is unconstitutional, as I've always contended.  The court sentences offenders for offenses they've committed in the past and have already paid their debt to society for, yet the court resentences them again as repeat offenders.

We have an attorney who is going to take my son's case, file a motion to review his sentence, which will go up on appeal to the 4th DCA and I pray my son will be home with us next year.

ROC has many loop holes, they did not classify my son, as they should have...they only throw them in prison, hoping they won't have the resources to get help.

I certainly will keep you advised as we go through the process.  It would be wonderful if some of the prisoners could turn the system on it's ear and use it against Florida the same way Florida is using it against the inmates.  By the way, Otis Washington used 2 public defenders.

Do you remember a couple of weeks ago I told you about Asst. Warden Colson at Everglades C.I.? I'd still like to see him get a Gold Star in hopes it would not have to be rescinded. My son said he is really a nice guy and treats everyone with the utmost respect.
Peace, Sue

Subject: Gold Star

"At Everglades CI you presented a Gold Star to Mr. Colson on Monday October 11 2004. As someone who works for Mr. Colson, believe me he is not worthy of a gold star."  Someone who works for Mr. Colson.

I would like to find out why Mr. Colson has a Gold Star, he is the worst man you will ever meet. He treats staff like hell unless you play sports for him. If your not a softball, basketball, or football player don't ask him for anything, because he will ask you what sport you play. If you tell him none, he will say thank you and escort you out of his office. Keep my name off this.

NOTE: MTWT's Gold Star award is in response to the public's appreciation of employees who respond with unusual professionalism and/or humanity. Readers nominate staff for MTWT Gold Stars and often it has only to do with the officer being helpful to the nominator in a particular situation.  I have found that often the nominated officers don't really deserve a Gold Star in general, so I am putting a stop to awarding them unless I have comments from enough people to know they are overall higher quality officers.  Anyone can still be nominated, but the awards will be limited.  Because I've received a number of complaints about Mr. Colson, I am thereby presenting him as a nominee rather than awardee.

Assistant Warden Colson has been nominated for MTWT's GOLD STAR FOR PROFESSIONALISM. This mother thanks you, Mr. Colson, for the kindness you showed to her son. Kay Lee

Hi Kay Lee, While reading the Columbia page (catching up) I noticed a question you have posted there: "...when the inmates have to use the bathroom during visitation do the guards always stand over them while they urinate and/or have a bowel movement and is this DOC policy?"

At Everglades the answer is a resounding YES!  Can you imagine?  No matter what bodily function the inmate performs the guard is right there...closely watching!  If it wasn't so sick, it would be humorous.

No one searches the visitors when we exit the bathrooms, although, we are only allowed to use it one person at a time. However, after each person exits the bathroom, it is given a quick search.

"This is about an inmate hanging himself a few months ago at Everglades CI. The inmate was sprayed excessively, then encouraged to hang himself...which he ultimately did...shame on those damn guards!  The Captain on duty was For(r)est."

The Hanging:
The inmates bunks are attached to the wall with bolts...when one gets into his bunk, the guy's bunk on the other side of the wall tilts up, just as it tilts down when an inmate on the other side of the wall jumps out of his bunk.  This is how an inmate knew something was going on...(hanging)...his bunk on the other side of the wall began to vibrate back and forth

Everglades C.I. inmate death

Dear Kay, There was an apparent inmate suicide on Tuesday June 29th at the Everglades Correctional Institute in Miami. The inmate's name was Kenneth Hyde (I think).

My daughter heard this from an inmate  she visited this past weekend. He was friends with this man. He said many inmates are skeptical about the circumstances of his death and he asked my daughter to go to the news media about this matter. He also asked that his name not be mentioned (he doesn't want any problems with the C.O.s.

The only news coverage I could find on this was in the July 1st herald.com and I copied and pasted the article here for you. I didn't see it mentioned in the regular Miami Herald paper. Also, I went on the inmate search in the DOC website, and could not find any Kenneth Hyde.

Something does seem fishy about this. I am told that  he had requested psychological help and was refused, which is supposed to be  a violation of procedure. But anyway, how does someone not only manage to slash his wrists, but also hang himself?  The news article that follows does say that police are investigating.

I did contact a couple of tv news stations (channel 4 and 7 locally here) but don't know if there will be any followups. Do you have an media contacts that would be interested in investigating this death?

Thank you,
Jody

FROM EVERGLADES OFFICER:

The only thing that I know about that is Capt. Forrest applied chemical agents on him [Kenneth Hyde] the day before he "committed suicide."

(from herald.com on July 1, 2004):

MIAMI: INMATE COMMITTED SUICIDE BY HANGING, SLASHING WRIST

An inmate died Tuesday afternoon in a solitary confinement cell at Everglades Correctional Institution in southwestern Miami-Dade County. He was found hanging from his bed sheet, inside the cell.

Kenneth Hyde, of West Palm Beach, had ''slashed his wrists'' before the hanging, said Miami-Dade police spokesman Lupo Jimenez, and had ''psychiatric issues,'' raising questions about why he was not placed on suicide watch, instead of in a solitary confinement cell.

''We're told by prison officials that he was there because of vandalism and had to be restrained,'' Jimenez said.

Miami-Dade police are investigating.

Hyde, 29, convicted for a string of burglaries, had been in and out of Florida prisons since the age of 23. He was five years into a 20-year sentence for robbery with a deadly weapon when his body was found.

"I don't know what department this is but an inmate had approached a civilian clerk as he wanted to send his daughter a little money, perhaps a money order(?).

"The civilian lady at the window told him to come back at a certain time.  Due to her soft voice he wanted to make sure he understood the correct time and repeated what she said.  The female guard turned around and at the top of her voice literally screamed the time at him.  (Not to him, at him)...big difference!

"Do the guards think this is really necessary?  Don't they know this behavior makes them look like fools?

"It is commonly believed at Everglades that most of the female guards are welfare mothers right off the streets.  Most of them are ignorant, uneducated and have absolutely no social skills.  The State has given them a wee bit of authority and boy-oh-boy, they are really on a power trip!!!"

Four staff members been reported reassigned from Wakulla CI  to Everglades CI  and they are "promising changes".

1. (NEW Warden) Samuel Culpepper or Colepeper
2.  (NEW Asst Warden) Perkins
3.  (NEW Asst Warden) Colson
4.  (NEW Major) Ted Jeter

"Saturday, July 26, 2003:  Everglades C. I. now has a new administration that is promising changes  I mean we got a new Warden (Mr. Samuel Colepeper (Culpepper?), new assistant wardens (Mr. Perkins, and Mr.Colson) and Major Ted Jeter. From what we hear these guys came from Wakulla C.I. and they have promised to change the way inmates and staff are disciplined."

Take a look at the WAKULLA CI page and you'll find a little background on these men that will make you wonder, WHAT KIND OF CHANGES are these people promising?

Subject: News from Everglades CI

"Another errant guard got his comins' this past week at Everglades. He, also was one of those who constantly "rode" inmates until one particular inmate could no longer take it. The inmate "dread" (sorry, I don't know his name) gave him a well earned butt whipping.  Everyone agreed, some guards included, this particular guard had had it coming for a very long time.

OK, I have an issue which I believe is going to be one of particular interest.

Some men cannot urinate while being watched by others.  I wonder why the guards just can't turn their backs while  the inmates urinate for drug testing or do they hope and pray the inmates can't urinate so they can inflict their archaic punishment on them?

The inmates who do drugs in prison: 1) get their drugs from the guards 99.9% of the time are are protected by the errant guards;  2) they also continually keep themselves filled with water thereby masking all drug tests if and when their protective guards are not around to prevent them from being drug tested, or urinate for them.

A young man was pulled from his bunk, told to get dressed and taken for a drug test.  (I have good, honest information this inmate does NOT do drugs).  He was given 8 ounces of water, told he had one hour to provide the guard with a urine sample for drug testing.  Of course, being watched, he could not do as he was commanded to do.  He was therefore, thrown into solitary for 3 months, lost gain time of 180 days, and lost visitation for 2 YEARS!!! Kay, there is something wrong here!!!  This seems illegal!!!

The allotted time to produce a urine sample used to be 3 hours.  When my son was thrown into confinement for this same infraction, he produced a few drops and they threw it away...it was enough for a drug test...That too was ILLEGAL!

I would like to do something about this abuse of power...do you have any suggestions?  Would you put this on your website on Everglades CI, please?

Ofc. T. Davis and Ofc. L. Figeroa

Both of them reported for using excessive amounts of chemical agents in the confinement units.

I guess they haven't noticed or don't care that Florida inmates are suing the DoC for misuse of chemical agents.

Miss Lee, I'm writing this for a friend of mine at the Everglades Correctional Institution, who I went to see yesterday and I showed him the print out pages about Everglades, and he said whoever was telling you those things about Sgt. Davis were just being untruthful. My buddies name is Lawrence Swails. He said he worked for Sgt. Davis in the kitchen and he was always very fair, Lawrence says that he always looked out for his inmates and would let them know when trouble was coming. He asked me to let you know. Thank you.

REGARDING INMATE LAWRENCE SWAILS' DEFENSE OF SGT. DAVIS

After putting Inmate Swails' compliment online, I received this update.

Wednesday, December 22, 2004 8:22 PM

"Miss Lee,  I hate to bother you, but Lawrence says that those guards have been harrasing him since his post appeared on your website. Lawrence says the guards have told him they do not need to be defended by a convict."

I'd be shocked at this callous behavior except I've long ago learned that guards (as opposed to officers) appear to enjoy being angry at inmates and look for any excuse. Maybe they are on steroids and having roid rage. Florida needs to do some massive housecleaning. Sgt Davis and friends really need to chill out.  Kay Lee

Sgt. Davis at Taylor CI

ROID RAGE
"Throughout the triangle and especially across the street at Florida State Prison, there was (and is) a big problem with uncontrolled roid rage among guards.  My neighbor in G-dorm, an 18 year veteran convict of the area, told me tales of skinny young uniforms (sons or grandsons of guards) just beginning their rites of passage as newly employed officers, fearfully walking the corridors all stick-insect insecure, then bulking up overnight on steroids, bragging about it, losing their cool a few times over tiny things (testosteronic overload), eventually becoming mountains of angry muscle with no brain to accompany all that power.  I myself have had RHOID rage a time or two, but rhoids and roids are two different things." ~Gary Brooks Waid

OLDER NEWS

UPDATE  APRIL 2003
Everglades CI has been temporarily shut down!
More on the story will follow.

Everglades CI was COMPLETELY emptied out; all of the inmates there were transferred to other prisons, and now NEW inmates are being transferred into Everglades CI.

A nurse at Everglades was stabbed by one or more inmates and is in critical condition.  Some guards were also attacked by some inmates here, and that is supposed to explain why all the inmates were transferred.

Why would the inmates have done this?  What could they possibly have hoped to accomplish?  Was it over the food?  Were they driven to it by guards with big flashlights?  We will continue to try to find the whole story.

Inmate stabs prison nurse in West Dade facility.
Miami Herald:
Wednesday, February 12, 2003

A prison nurse was in critical condition after an inmate at the Everglades Correctional Institution stabbed her several times at the West Miami-Dade facility. The 30-year-old woman was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Unit shortly after the 4 p.m. attack, said a Miami-Dade fire department spokesman. The woman, a member of the facility's medical staff, was just starting her shift. She had passed through the main gate and was walking across the prison compound on her way to the medical facility. That's when a male inmate came at her with a shank, or homemade knife, said Sterling Ivey, a spokesman with the Florida Department of Corrections. The alleged assailant was identified as 200-pound, 5-foot, 10-inch tall, Anthony Johnson, sentenced to life in prison nearly 14 years ago for a slew of armed-robbery convictions.

Everglades is the prison where a guard hit Darren Ashford over the head with a flashlight, causing ongoing seizures.  They then transferred him to Taylor, where a couple of guards finished the mental destruction of this young man.  Darren was then moved to Charlotte CI as a mental case.
He is now being held at Columbia CI.

OFFICE OF THE STATE ATTORNEY -- FLORIDA:

Edward Griffith, Administrative Assistant

Date: February 6, 2001
Subject: Arrest of a State Department of Corrections Officer

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announces that the Office of the State Attorney, the Executive Investigative Unit of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Inspector General’s Office of the State Department of Corrections have arrested Kelvin L. Cooper, a State Department of Corrections Officer at the Everglades Correctional Institution. Officer Cooper was videotaped taking money to bring drugs into the correctional institution.

Officer Cooper is charged with 1 count of Unlawful Compensation, a third degree felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

According to State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, "The arrest of Officer Cooper is another example of how the law enforcement partnership of the State Attorney’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Department of Corrections work to hold accountable any law enforcement personnel who try to use their positions of trust as a means of personal enrichment. I know that every law enforcement professional finds such conduct repugnant. I will not tolerate such actions and neither will any member of our law enforcement community."

I would like to know how to report an "officer" for your errant guard list? My errant guard is
Captain J. Wilson from Everglades C.I., for numerous false D.R.s.

Several times on first shift he would write D.R.s on inmates just to show them who was in charge, and that if they got out of line he could and would make their lives hell.

He goes up to inmates and asks to see their medical passes, which are passes for no shaving, no prolong standing, or able to wear their shower slides on the compound. He will tear them up and then write the inmate up for not having a valid pass in their possession.
