If anyone has any ongoing updates on the wardens at Lawtey and Baker or any of the prisons, please let me know.
FDOC WARDENS LISTS
Oct 2005: Wardens are frequently changing in FDOC. This link brings up the most current list of Warden's and Administrator, although it's accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. It comes out every two months: http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/cjst/publications/AgencyAddresses/CorrectionLabels.pdf
For a past history of wardens lists they are archived on MTWT at

TIME CARDS
October 2005
If Major Ellis at Baker CI's new girlfriend, who works the admin shift at New River, carries his lunch to him everyday at 11.30am and stays until 12:30pm (a full hour) to eat with him (sometimes behind closed doors), then how does she account for the 30 minutes it takes her to drive from NR to Baker and the 30 minutes it takes her to drive back? When they both worked at FSP, it could have been covered in an hour, but not now. Isn't lunch just an hour or am I mistaken?

NEW PLUMBER
Oct. 2005: "The new plumber at Baker CI used to drive a Budweiser truck but now Mr. Lee plays ball for the FDOC."
Tonight (Sept-16-03) at Baker Correctional Institution at approximately 7 Pm Eastern - a Black Prisoner was stabbed by a White prisoner on the yard. Baker was in lock down until about 8:30 Pm. No other information but the prisoner was airlifted out. Last word is he did not die.

ALERT: FOOD DISTURBANCE AT BAKER
RE: Disturbance at Baker CI
Tuesday 02/04/2003Twenty Five inmates were shipped to Florida State Prison on Feb 3, 2003 for causing a disturbance over food service. All of region II riot squads were on call for if and when an outbreak occured. Well, it did. I wonder if the news media has gotten ahold of this story concerning the improper feeding of inmates by the State contractor Aramark.
This is it........ Aramark is putting many lives in jeapordy with its small portions, undercooked, and nasty food. Inmates and Officers alike are in danger of getting seriously hurt or killed over this situtation. What are we to do?Signed: An Officer

From: Security Staff Member/Baker Correctional
Comments: AramarkTwenty five inmates had to take the fall for a whole compound of angry/hungry inmates. These inmates were shipped to Florida State Prison in Starke, FL. Why? Because they had the guts to do what management has known for a long time now. No one was hurt in this. During the Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner meals, all 1,200 inmates stayed inside their dorms and choose not to report to the chow hall for their meal. Inmates have written requests, issued informal grievances, and even formal grievances concerning the food contractor Aramark.
Today, Feb 4, 2003, all of the high officials from Aramark and DC were inside Baker Correctional Institution to fix what they have know has been broken for years. Now, Twenty-five inmates, who did not start a riot, did not lay a finger on anyone, did not threaten staff or resort to any other type of violence were shipped to a total lock down institution. FOR WHAT? I commend the inmates for standing up for their basic civil rights without using violence. It is a shame that it took the guts of these inmates to get the attention of management.
I wish the news media would pick up on this story. Why are these men now housed at FSP? How can DC officials prove that they were the ring leaders? Hell, all inmates at Baker should have been shipped to lock-down. I hope people will look at this situtation and see that sometimes, even an inmate has a right to voice his/her civil rights.
For staff, we got very lucky this time. In two short days, inmates were able to organize over a thousand to skip their meals and go hungry. This is a big deal. Pay attention. Next time, and I am sure there will be, staff and inmates alike may not get out of this without physical force and injury.
MARCH 7, 2003:
Important that you know several of the Baker C.I. inmates that were transferred to FSP because of the food service Boycott have ended up at New River West, the backyard of FSP.~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
WISE CHOICES: IMPROVED FOOD
Friday, May 09, 2003
I haven't seen any new posts lately but I just wanted you to know that because of the action of the inmates at Baker with the Aramark incident that major improvements have been made.
I for one have always believed that one of the most important things in a prison setting in keeping order (There is usually 25-30 of us with 800-1000 of them) is to feed them well. The entire menu system has been changed and now almost every inmate in my dorm goes to most every meal. All inmates I have asked are really impressed with the food and it's not like it just lasted a week or two while the "bigwigs" were there. This has been a while now and things seem to be improving more. Just thought I would let you know.
An Officer at Baker

Thank you for this update. I have indeed been getting reports from several institutions lately that the food has improved. I will post this (without your email and name) on the Baker site. My hat is off to the DOC for making a wise choice to do something about the food before someone really got hurt. Kay Lee
RE: ARAMARK AGAIN and VISITOR'S TREATMENT TOO
September 16, 2003Just one month ago they had so many cases of intestinal illness at Baker C.I. that they had to call in the health department. Naturally, no one was told what they found.
Although most of us do not have criminal backgrounds and are working taxpayers, we are treated like criminals when we go to visit our loved ones. The only way to have a chance to change things is to make our voices heard, however, when we do that, we put our loved ones at risk of retribution from the department and their "enforcers".
Is there no one in power out there that can understand and appreciate the fact that our loved ones may have done wrong, but do not deserve to be treated like animals? Do they REALLY believe that there are no "bogus" DRs and that our loved ones are not still subjected to physical abuse at the whim of certain guards?
Nomination - Deserving DOC Employee
MTWT Gold Star Award is hereby awarded to
CHAPLAIN FRED PRIESTERBaker CI, Sanderson, FL
Chaplain Priester goes the extra mile for all inmates. He goes above and beyond and has the heart of GOLD. He understands, takes the time inmates need to talk, and he actually listens and remembers what they tell him. He makes sure that all the guys are spiritually fed and allows them to actually feel loved by someone. He constantly has ministry volunteers come to the Chapel to bring wonderful music, seminars, bible studies and much, much more. He always has materials and bibles available for all who need it. He keeps up with a variety of music so that there is something for everyone, from the young all the way to the older guys. He is one employee that DOC never recognizes and HE IS ONE THAT SHOULD ALWAYS BE RECOGNIZED. If you ask ANY inmate at BAKER CI they will tell you how wonderful CHAPLAIN PRIESTER IS and what he has done for them spiritually, mentally and physically. HE CARES and it is truly a blessing for BAKER!

BAD GUARD AT BAKER
Naming Sgt. Thornton and Ms Jennings
It has also come to my attention that Sgt Thornton, reported relation to Timothy "Big Red" Thornton, has been terrorizing the visitors at Baker CI. long enough. He is hereby put on notice that his behavior is being documented and complaints will be filed unless his behavior changes. This man is not just going to go away. We consider him to be dangerous to the rights of families and prisoners and we demand that he be either retrained in the proper and respectful treatment of citizens, reassigned, or fired.
We are collecting statements from other visitors who have been inappropriately hassled in the Visitor's Park and those who have observed this behavior occurring. A copy of the tape made in the Baker Visitor's Park on Sunday, 12/15/02 has been ordered and will be obtained through a public information request. We are also chronicling all retaliation efforts on the prisoners of those who are reporting Thornton's behavior. All information will be combined to make formal complaints and to bring legal action if necessary.
Reported Jan 2003: Sgt. Thornton is no longer working the visitor's park at Baker CI.

Kay Lee, Here is the letter I wrote to Warden Dodd if you would like to post it as well.
Peace,
D. Mc~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
November 25, 2001
Dear Warden Dodds:
Greetings, I write with concerns regarding this Institution's visiting registration procedures... I am writing on my behalf and also on the behalf of those who feel intimidated and are afraid to voice their concerns out in the open. They feel that by doing so they will be "retaliated" against by having their loved one moved further away or have their visitation privileges taken away in some way.
My husband is an inmate in your facility since January 1, 2001. I live in the Tampa Bay area and a trip up to see him takes approximately 3 1/2 hours traveling time. I understand that visiting is a privilege, and I am truly grateful. But there are rules concerning the visiting procedure, and one of those rules clearly states and is underlined that "institutions shall initiate the visiting registration process not later than 8:15 A.M."
This is according to Chapter 33-601.722 / Under Section III - Notices of Changes, Corrections, and Withdrawals as posted in the Florida Administrative Weekly Report. (September 21, 2001)33-601.722 Visiting Schedule.
(1) Regular visitors shall be allowed to visit between 9:00
AM and 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST) – 8:00 AM and
2:00 PM Central Standard Time CST each Saturday and
Sunday.
(a) Institutions shall initiate the visiting registration
process not later than at 8:15 AM EST and 7:15 AM CST.
(b) Visitors shall not be processed after 2:00 PM EST and
1:00 PM CST unless authorized by the duty warden.Baker consistently begins the registration process at a few minutes before 9:00 or at 9:00 or after 9:00 while we are waiting in line watching the officers stand outside chatting, drinking coffee/cokes and taking cigarette breaks ... is this part of their work duties? If questioned as to why they start the registration procedure so late, the answer has been "You're at Baker now" (this is according to others) ... although I myself have been given courteous answers as well. (The young man who works up front, tall, thin, has always been extremely courteous and helpful, I'm sorry but I forget his name!)
Three weeks ago I presented a printed out copy of this registration procedure rule to your staff and they were gracious enough to begin checking us in at 8:30 for those two days ... but I understand from talking with others that this did not occur during the following three weeks. And I and my daughter and grandson arrived at Baker this Saturday (11-24) at 9:00 only to find the entire line there still waiting ... registration began at 9:05 or so ... and by the time we entered the facility it was after 10:00 AM and 10:30ish by the time we started our visit with my husband.
On another occasion we waited due to the "fog" and that because of the "fog" the grounds were closed down for security reasons, which I understand is a common procedure for the "inmates" inside of the compound. But I fail to understand what bearing this has on visitors being checked "into" the facility in a timely manner. (we are entering, not exiting) and I am also aware that the two facilities down the road (Lake City and Columbia) do not hold off their visiting check in procedure because it is foggy outside...
My purpose in writing to you about this is because I have tried other avenues (calling Central Visitation, talking to your staff) to rectify this situation and they have failed, and I realize that you are a busy man, and new to this facility and my intentions are not to add any more burden upon you! It is just very irritating Warden Dodds when one has to travel so far, and then not be allowed to visit for the time that is allowed ... and I would still feel this way if my husband were only a few miles away. This time together is what holds us together as a family, along with the grace and blessings of the Lord. DOC states that it encourages family visitation, but I and others whom I speak for, feel differently when we are treated this way.
I hope that my letter and concerns to you will be addressed. And if I am wrong or have interpreted the visitation rule incorrectly, please forgive me.
I wish you and yours a Blessed and Happy Holiday season.
Sincerely,
D. Mc~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
