Chord Formulas

The following chart shows the scale notes or Chord Formulas used to create various commonly encountered chords. If, for example, you wanted to know which notes comprise the CM7 chord you would look at the chart below and see that Major 7 chords include the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th notes of the C Major scale. A Major Scale Notes Chart, in this section of the web site, shows you that this would be the C, E, G, and B notes. Notes identified with "()" are optional notes that are frequently omitted when creating guitar chords.
