What Can Be Done

The debate over violent and aggressive lyrics in music will no doubt rage on. Here are some ideas about what can be done.

- Higher Parental Monitoring

Since studies have found that violent tendencies are less frequent after listening to violent music when parental control is high, it seems clear that if families encourage communication their children may be less likely to act on aggressive tendencies. Parents should also take an active role in their children's lives, taking note of what music they are buying and what radio stations they are tuning their dials to. Through this, not only will aggressive behavior hopefully decrease, but the family will hopefully become closer as well.

- Retail Stores taking Responsibility

Salespeople need to take more responsibility with their jobs, and more frequently enforce the use of warning stickers, and therefore prohibiting minors to purchase such albums. All stores and all salespeople need to join this bandwagon, or else teens will quickly learn which store is selling albums with explicit lyrics to underage kids, and take their business there.

- Continue Use of Warning Stickers

Warning stickers let parents and listeners know that an album contains explicit lyrics. Without these warning stickers parents would not truly know what was contained in the music their children listen to. It gives parents a sense of security in that knowing the record industry wants to protect children as well.

- Artists Taking Responsibility

Artists should not have to compromise their artistic integrity, but they must understand that certain age groups should not listen to certain music. If artist make music that contains violent lyrics, they should not market their music to young children. Artists also need to understand that they are role models to countless children of varying ages, and try to act that way as much as possible.
