Basic IRC Commands

IRC

IRC stands for "Internet Relay Chat". That is what our site uses to allow users to chat with eachother. You may have heard something about mIRC. mIRC is an IRC Chat client that you can download, and connect to any IRC server you want, it is a whole separate program. On our site we use a JavaScript client that just pops up and connects right to our chat room, so that you don't have to go download anything. Go ahead and try it.

Chatting

Once you have gotten into the chat room or 'channel', look to the right. You will see a list of screen names. This is a list of all the people currently in that channel with you. (Of course, if you are the only on in there, then your name is the only one thats going to be in that list).
There are several different levels of users in IRC. It goes something like this: (not exact, but this is the general setup)

Administrators
IRC Operators
Channel Operators
Regular Users

NOTE: You might be wondering about people you see with an '@' in front of their name. This pretty much means that they have a little more power in the channel than anyone else. They are commonly referred to as "Ops" or "Opers". They can boot, or ban people from a channel, and change channel settings and such. People with a "+" in front of their name are just average users that have been "voiced". (Voicing has nothing to do with audio chat) Voiced people get no special priveledges in a channel.

Commands

If you want to type a command in IRC, all you need to do is type it in the regular chat box, and the results will be displayed in the chat window. Almost, if not all commands look something like this:
/command parameter argument1 argument2
Here are some basic commands as well as what they do.

Command	What it does
/join	Example: "/join #channel" This command takes you to the channel you specify. You must have the '#' sign.
/nick	Example: "/nick Barkley" This command changes your nickname to the one you specify.
/msg	Example: "/msg Aldaris Hey hows it going" This command sends a private message to the person you specify. Syntax: /msg (Their Nick) (the message you want to send to them)
/help	Example: "/help Commands" Brings the help menu up for the subject you specify.
/list	This command lists all of the channels currently registered on the server.
