Welcome to Buddy Reading! We have created this Cyber Hub to allow current members, new members, and interested guests to get a better feel of what exactly we do.
Buddy Reading is a service learning program designed to increase the amount, skill level, and enjoyment of reading for children in the critical grades of second and ninth. In the first phase of the project, we retrained 42 high school students to read one-on-one with second graders at Fulford Elementary School with Gayle Kugelman as facilitator. The second step of the "Buddy Reading" program was to pair a high school reading mentor one-on-one with a second grader. Every Friday, after school, these students walk approximately one mile to read for 30 minutes with their buddies. The second phase of the program was to train new ninth graders in the "Buddy Reading" method. To our surprise 47 students showed up for the two and one-half hour training process. These students, with Carlos Lora as facilitator, will be reading with second graders at Sabal Palm Elementary also on Friday afternoons. Buddy Reading promotes a love of reading through service learning. Students involved in the program will be able to experience, and understand their impact on improving the community through their service.
