Kyra Nichols began her ballet training with her mother, Sally Streets, a former NYCB dancer. At age 13, she began attending summer sessions at School of American Ballet. She became a company apprentice in 1974, and joined the corps de ballet later that year. She was promoted to the rank of Soloist, and then quickly promoted to Principal in 1979.
