Kirov Ballet

The Kirov Ballet and the Kirov Ballet Academy, both of St. Petersburg, Russia, date back to 1738. The original school was founded by Ballet Master Jean-Baptiste Lande. Years later, Empress Catherine the Great founded the Mariinsky ballet company, later to become the Kirov Ballet. The company thrived under the leadership of such ballet masters as Madame Vaganova Marius Petipa. It aquired vast repertoire and developed techniques still alive today. Particularly the Vaganova technique have survived through the turmoil of the past 250 years, and are still taught throughout the world, primarily at the Kirov Academy, which opened a school in Washington D.C. in 1993. The ballet company has an enormous repertory and is one of the most famous ballet companies in the world.
