Giselle

Music: Adolphe Adam
Choreography: Jules Perrot, Jean Corralli
In Giselle, a young prince, Prince Albrecht, disguises himself as a commoner, and rivals another suitor, Hillarion, for the affections of Giselle, a peasant girl. They dance together happily, and swear their love. Giselle's mother reminds her that she is not to exert herself. Prince Albrecht's true identity is revealed, as well as the fact that he is engaged to another girl. Giselle goes mad, in the imfamous "mad scene" and kills herself. In the second act, Albrecht goes to visit Giselle's grave, which is in the eerie woods. She is buried there along with the other suicides, as such they were not entitled to a proper burial. The Wilis, young women who have been betrayed and died before their weddings inhabit the woods. They curse anyone who enters the woods by dancing them to death, but just at the last moment, Giselle intercedes and rescues Albrecht.
