MTWT'S OUT OF STATE STORIES prove that what is happening in Florida, is happening to some degree all over the nation. We have created a monster system that warehouses human beings in the cheapest manner possible and then turns them out sicker, angrier, and more hopeless than they were when they went in.
Although many state prison systems are now called "departments of corrections", the 'get-tough-on-crime' mentality of three strikes, jailing of the non-violent, and mandatory minimums have resulted in the mass incarceration of more than two million people at once here in America. "D.O.C." is a sardonic misnomer. There is NO corrections going on in prison!
The parole system has all but disappeared and the probation system has become nothing more than a trap to suck the ex-offender back in, assuring job security for the keepers, budgets for the states, profits for the industries, and total destruction of the offender and his family... and you're paying for it all.
No matter what you think about prisoners, for the sake of public safety, we have got to use incarceration only as a last resort, so that we can return to the concept of education and rehabilitation. Our children's futures depend on it. Kay Lee
