Oscar Wilde, an ex-convict himself, reflects in his “Ballad of Reading Gaol”:

The debate is never-ending in the United States concerning the level of mistreatment and neglect of prisoners who are being held in the apparently omnipotent Department of "Corrections".  The DOC says nothing's wrong, but others don't agree.

"The food is unhealthy and scarce, medical is mostly malpractice, proper clothing is lacking, employees are unhelpful, the grievance process is broken, the punishments are cruel, and bad guards seem have the go ahead from bosses rumored to be exhibiting all kinds of criminal behavior themselves."

Despite great fear, evidential of real risks and desperation, family members, friends, and concerned others insist that something must be done now.

No, I'm not an impartial reporter - Not anymore. I used to be, but now I have studied this situation deeply... for years. I've lived it through the eyes of all involved. And, if the public does not step in and force reform, I see a clear vision of the FLDOC just a few years up the road - Auschwitz.

So, I know why these ladies and gentlemen are coming together - this growing army of fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, sisters and brothers, and significant others - and grandmas.

With the passion of the mother lioness, with the anger of the righteous, always in the peaceful spirit  of Gandhi, they come to protect their own!

IF all is well in the DOC, somebody better prove it to the families soon.

But IF problems are as real as we believe them to be, we owe it to the safety of all of society to 'find it and fix it' NOW! Or you'll soon hear the grumbling of discontent become a mighty roar when society begins to fully realize the long-term costs of ignoring the problems now!

The Lolits are taking action on many subjects of grave concern. They are gathering useful information and contacts that may be helpful to you, sorted by subject in the table below.

You can tell your representatives that this kind of power in the hands of unprofessionals adds to tension inside the walls, pressure on the families, and presents real and present danger to the rest of us. Kay Lee

HOW TO WRITE YOUR REPRESENTATIVES

The Florida Lolits are a support & action group for families and friends with loved ones in Florida prisons.

The Lolits focus on various abuses committed by those "acting under color of law".

Florida Lolits require action on each member's part.

Action means letter writing, phone calls, emails, research, and/or requesting public records: It means demonstrations, rallies, vigils and/or speaking engagements. We understand that there will be times you may not be able or comfortable to participate in the action. Come join us and we can learn together what works and what doesn't. When my son went to prison, I was even too afraid to give my email address. Just ask Kay Lee!! Now it's action time! We expect professionalism from those in uniform!

Guard's should not have the power to frighten prisoners into silence and families into compliance.  Especially when we know we are often dealing with less than qualified personnel; people not properly trained in all the aspects of controlling another human's life, often too young, too mean, too ignorant, too frightened, or too poorly trained to be 'correcting' the lives of others.
