"Another Friday noght in our town-perfect brisk Florida winter weather for music scene hopping. First stop on the musical sojourn was Daiquiri Deck on Madeira Beach. Order a cold drink, but stay for the tunes. Your night will take a turn for the better! Enter Soulsystem. With their slick MTV look, Soulsystem's opening cover tune was unexpectedly Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved" With two equally talented guitar players beefing up the simple rhythm, this bit of classic reggae cut a slik new-age edge that was refreshing. From that point you're hooked, wanting more. "Baby, We Belong Together" is a heartfelt original from their first CD entitled Disguised in Sound. It's a smooth R&B melody with singing guitar licks and lyrics that actually go somewhere.
From Nirvana to Santana, Soulsystem recreates our favorites with their own funky guitar-based riffs and high-energy vocals that rock! Tops for the evening was their rendition of the Police's "So Lonely". Excellent! By Creatively infusing Sting's style with a slice of Skynard's "Freebird" lyrics, this song takes on a totally new personality.
Soulsystem has been together for two years, perfecting their sound as funk/rock/reggae. Formerly known as Zodiac, the band incorperated guitarist and vocalist Steve Alex to infuse more originals into their reportoire and Voila! Soulsystem was born. Add to that mesh, killer electric guitarist Tony Purnell, Drummer Mike Chilton who deserves kudos for tying the band together with his thumping beat, and bassist Johnny Deliz with his deadly charm on his 6-string Yamaha. According to Steve, the band's success is a 'collective effort'
You can usually catch Soulsystem in action at a number of local venues such as Gator's, Jimmy B's and Player's on St. Pete Beach. Or try to catch one of their originals currently beigh played on 95.7 FM from 7:00pm to midnite.
To purchase Soulsystem's first smash CD Disguised in Sound, check out their website www.soulsystem.net or better yet, grab your wallet and experience this incredible band with thier outrageous vocals and screaming guitar tangos. Witness energy unleashed! Also, keep your eyes open for their second CD soon to be released in the beginning of 2001!
Be on the look-out for a video of Soulsystem's performance on the main stage at the 2001 Bud Bowl as part of this year's Superbowl XXXV festivities in Tampa.
This winter Soulsystem is gonna be hittin' the road kinda, the first places we wanna break into are gonna be Orlando and Gainesville. We'll be at The Sidebar in Gainesville on October 10th, and at the Florida Theatre on December 15th. It will be early 2001 by the time we get to Orlando. We have scheduled a show on January 11th at Liquid Cellar on University Ave across from UCF. We look forward to making some new friends around central Florida.
Check out the new video for the song "Mind and Body". The performance was recorded at the MP3.com Summer 2000 tour as it made its' way through Tampa. The footage was taped by Mike Featherstone and Jorge Giminez and produced by Jorge and Powerflux Studios. You will need Quicktime 4.0 to view the high res. video. St. Petersburg Times' CD Review
"Tampa Bay's Soulsystem plays a funky, and well, yes, soulful brand of rock with roots in Prince and Sly and the Family Stone. The smooth R&B groove of Heaven is followed by the reggae inflected Confusion, with guitar licks hot and spicy throughout. Singer Steve Alex sounds like the Purple One on the R&B ballad (Baby, We Belong) Together. But don't get too weepy; upbeat jams like The Soul of You will make you want to shake your tamborine.

Taken from issue #290
Angsty, but upbeat, this debut release from the Clearwater quartet formerly known as The Nines blends the power ballad conventions of adult alternative radio with the greeting card sensuality of Urban Top 40. Call it the bastard child of '90s radio. The playing is tight...the lyrics inventive. And some of the songs sound strangely familiar- "(Baby, We Belong) Together" takes its melody line from the Neil Young/Nicolette Larson chestnut "Lotta Love"....The guitar work of Paul Anthony is fluid, especially since it tastefully binds the songs to their bluesy or funk-rock core without letting them slip into AOR syrup.(back)

Somethin is sho 'nuff funky going on here. Ok, so maybe its not the dayglow Afros and satin shirts worn by the Hunks of Funk, but do you know of a more appropriately named band than these guys? The biggest difference of course is that while everybody else's soul brothers are trying to duplicate bump per bump of the Ohio Players or the Dazz band, our buddies in Soul System own up to a closer examination at the songwriting and production values of the golden era, listening to the likes of Ashford-Simpson, Gamble-Huff, and Holland-Dozier-Holland. Though mostly the brainchild of writer, arranger, producer Steve Alex. It's nuff said then that the Soul System project draws off the essence of 60's soul with some stylish Marvin Gaye jazz r'n'b and a few modern Princely moves. Toss in a few alt.indie flavorings andthe sound is something like the retro fittings of Dag, but with a few inflections of The Dave Mathews Band. Now if those expense account-totin' A&R guys would get busy hunting down the new talent (instead of chasing down every Korn cast-off) we'd recommend afew tracks here like Mind and Body and (Baby, We Belong) Together. "Good track Singer at times sounded a bit Lennon-ish. Well produced. I have to say out of all the songs I've reviewed so far, this is the best one. Good job"
Confusion / Anonymous- Madison, Wisconson
"Sweet taste with an alright aftertaste. I dig the instrumental play. The melody is cool...I can't put my finger on it. I like this the best of all the songs i've heard though. They have some talent, and they are a different sound." (back)
