Cloud Srife was born in Nibelheim Town, in the foothills of the Mount Nibel area. His father died shortly after his birth due to unknown causes, and his mother was killed in a house fire during the 'Nibelheim Incident.' Cloud Strife was known about town as being a loner of sorts, a quiet child, yet he was very easily provoked to violence. Cloud joined the Shinra Army at age 14, where he became known as an excellent fighter. At age 15, he attempted to join the ranks of SOLDIER, but was subsequently denied due to his failure to pass the Makou Acceptance Exam. Doctor's reports state that he became intensely ill after moderate amounts of Makou were administered during the exam. Cloud became depressed and irritable afterward, and his fighting talents showed signs of decreasing. He was given an assignment five years ago, to assist and aid two members of SOLDIER (Sephiroth and Zack -last name unknown-) during a routine investigation of the Nibel Area Makou Reactor. (The 'Nibelheim Incident') Cloud was sent up to the reactor with Sephiroth and returned safely, yet the following day he would return to the reactor, and was not seen again until recent times. Local rumours surrounding the dissappearance of Cloud and the Nibelheim Incident abound - some rumours involve the disappearance of Sephiroth at the same time (some people say that Cloud threw Sephiroth into the Makou pit where he died - but Sephiroth's superiors all suggest the impossibility of this) and others involve allegations of bizarre experimentation by Professor Hojo (Hojo, of course, denied any such activities).

Cloud reappeared as a mercenary member of the rebel group AVALANCHE, in Midgar some five years after the 'Nibelheim Incident'. He soon after became the leader of the group, and has led several attacks against Shinra, the Turks, and its Makou reactors. He even raided the Shinra Headquarters and assaulted President Rufus Shinra. He is one of Shinra's most powerful enemies, and should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. His last known whereabouts were at the Northern Crater, at the Jenova Reunion. He has disappeared again since the collapse of the Northern Cave and the summoning of Meteor.
