Over the years, a long series of mergers have left
the number of major railroad companies dwindled to just 4 plus a few regionals
and a large number of short lines. Along with the falling flags went the
variety of paint schemes and the junk power. The search for fallen flag
paint schemes became more and more fruitless. A few more years heading
in this direction and the trip to the few remaining active mainlines was
going to get less and less exciting. The potential to see something different
was heading South. Along this, came the revival of the leasing companies.
The variety in paint schemes from both the fallen flags and the new companies
is now starting to make up for the artistic sterility of the big four.
Helms, FURX and LMS paint schemes easily beat any of the big four paintshemes.
Also the junk power has had a new lease on life thanks to the leasing companies.
Helms roster speak for that statement. After the take-over of Conrail,
CSX had to lease some power. A lot of this power has been seen along the
Tallahassee sub, where curiously enough CSX power has been going through
a disappearing act. (no complaint from me, though!)
