My Present Location: Webuye, Western Province, Kenya
I am in the ninth day of my visit here in Kenya, and I have already preached eight times, and have given much money away to the poor and to the orphans.
There are orphans everywhere. It seems that any good man of God has more than ten orphans here. If you have less than ten, it seems you are suspect. What a place!
Yesterday, we journeyed to Cunyao, which is in the West of Kenya, on the border with Uganda. To get there, you travel by hard road to Kitale. From there, also by hard road, north to a small town. Then, you travel by dirt road, north and west for two and one half hours to reach Cunyao.
Bishop Patrick Wachiye planted a church here some time ago. It has now grown to the place where they cannot fit into any building they have, so they move some benches out to the shade of a bush.
This really is the bush. On the way there, I saw three naked little boys playing with a herd of seven camels. While there, I drank my first camel's milk, and ate fire roasted goat for the very first time. Both were very good.
The drive out there was quite arduous and it was pretty hot there, as the elevation is low, and there is very little rain there. An hour from Cunyao is the town of Kongelier, which is on the river Suam. I saw people of every age bathing naked on the banks of the river, which is quite different than anything seen down where I am staying down in Western Province in Webuye. The people here all wear clothing.
Most of the people at Cunyao have never seen a television or a computer. Russia, China and the USA could destroy each other in nuclear war, and these people might never hear of it. Most of them never venture to the nearest large city, Kitale, in their entire lifetimes.
It is told me of this people that they believe that the flies are their riches. As a result, flies abound. These are most unusual flies. They are not afraid of the human hand. They are never swatted here, and so, they do not move when you pass your hand near to them. I suspect you could even pet the heads of some of these flies.
These people also believe that every cow, anywhere on the Earth, is theirs. When they go to another country, they will simply take the cows, because they all belong to them.
Despite their differences, and their oddities, these people are hungry for God's word, and they have the joy of the Lord. Their pastors must constantly remind them to forsake the tribal idolatries, and their desire to sacrifice to the local demonic deities. Nevertheless, more than twenty confessed their desire to give their lives to the Lord Jesus yesterday when I preached there.
I have been much afflicted while here with several maladies. Please keep me in your prayers. I believe much deliverance was accomplished during our five day mission in Chwele, in Western Kenya. This week, we shall minister in this area. Next week, we shall travel a thousand miles to the capital city of Rwanda, where we will hold crusade outdoor meetings, home meetings, church revival meetings and others. I desire to provide for all the orphans I meet. Funds are running low, but God assures me that money is chasing me.
My email access has been very slow the last few times online. It is difficult to communicate here with people who have contacted me, so please, be patient with me.
Here is the itinerary for the next trip, from December 27, 2004, to January 21, 2005
December 29th to January 2nd 2005-meetings will be taking place at Chwele, Western Province, Kenya
January 4th to 5th, 2005-meetings at Kolongolo
January 6th to 9th, 2005-meetings at Chepsaida
January 12 to 15th, 2005-meetings at Kigali, Rwanda
January 18th to 20th, 2005-meetings at Malaha, Western Province, Kenya. This is prophet Maurice's church.
Blessings,
Stephen L. Bening
My Africa Wish List Is As Follows:
Project #1-$15,000-The Kittui water well. Received thus far: $7,000
Project #2-$5,000-Two, 250 person event tents-cost $2,500 each. I have already visited the tent manufacturer in Nairobi. We need this tent for holding bigger crusades in Kenya.
Project #3-$7,500-We need to purchase a sound system for use in the Kenya crusades. I am planning on being in Africa, four times per year. We rented the sound system for the three events we just held. We anticipate holding bigger events, and we will need a more powerful system. With the sound system, we need a generator to power it.
Project #4-$5,000-A truck for David Machimbo Walukhu, my missions coordinator, in Kenya. Right now, David has no vehicle, and travels by bus.
Project #5-$2,500-Repair for a large, panel Isuzu truck, that is currently sitting idle at Sowetto Academy, Nairobi. We will use this truck for hauling of tent and equipment.
Project #6-$5,000-Completion of the stone wall that will totally encircle Sowetto Academy. This is really needed to keep people from using walkways right through the middle of the school and orphanage. Right now, the wall is about 25% complete.
Project #7-$20,000-My estimate for the cost that it would take for Chris Ocumu to accomplish a second floor addition to the school building in Sowetto Academy.
So, there it is: $60,000 for the equipment. Add in $10,000 for my airfare and costs for four trips per year, and $10,000 for flyers and posters and $20,000 for other event costs for the 2005 outreach events and you have $100,000. Jesus says, "you have not because you ask not". I say, Lord Jesus, I Am Asking!
