This candle is placed on this page in the memory of my sister, who'se life was snuffed out far too early at the hands of a murderer. This candle and the memory of my sister burns eternal on the internet.
"I come before you not in search of retribution, or in the persuit of vengeance. I come before you in the hopes that the day will come that no man will ever have to stand here in my place" ERROL MCINNES
As many of you who have been led here know, my name is Errol McInnes, and I'm active in support of the death penalty. This was an opinion not easily arrived at. I did not simply say "kill them all and let God sort them out". I have a great deal of value for the sanctity of life. I know all too well the repercussions of depriving one of their life. I was thrust into this issue in 1979 when my sister's life was taken by a murderer, and mine was forever changed.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK FROM MY PERSPECTIVE
Let's do a little exercise here at this point. Take a very good look at the picture on the right. This guy looks just like any guy you'd run across on the street. You'd pass by him on the way to work, or maybe you'd work with him. Very ordinary loking guy indeed, no? Now, at this point, step away from the computer, and go find your husband, your wife, or your kids, or perhaps a brother or sister who may be in the house or apartment right now. Go ahead, take a look. Make sure to remember the view you have right now. Now imagine that person you just looked at walks out of the house, says "I'll be back in an hour" and about 10 days later, the police show up at your doorstep informing you that the person you just took a look at has been found face down in a muddy bog, having been beaten to death, or perhaps shot or stabbed, or maybe strangled. Perhaps the person you are now looking at has in this little exercise been raped, mutilated, or made to suffer greatly before dying. The reason I had you take a look at the picture on the right is because the man in that picture is Anthony Brian, convicted and now executed murderer of a night watchman in the panhandle area of Florida. You can read more about that on the second page of this site.
As a direct result of myself, and many others like me, Anthony Brian will not ever be able to take that person you just looked at (and just imagined the unimaginable about) and kill them. The work of advocates like me has DETERRED Anthony Brian, and Terry Sims (another executed murderer) from ever killing again. The death penalty DETERS murder. At least two murders were DETERRED on 24 March, 2000. One of those murders that were DETERRED may very well have been YOUR loved one. I'd say that is something to consider while weighing the value of the life of a convicted murderer, and what impact that murderer may have on YOUR life.
THE PAGE'S MISSION STATEMENT
This page is by design, a place for those who have an opinion on the issue to come, learn, and voice their opinion. I hope reader contributions will help this page to grow, and it is also my hope that people of differing views will come here to this place to gather some insight into the reasons that others might think differently, and learn to respect each other for their differing views.
THE PROPOSITION OF LIFE IN PRISON AS A SANCTION
A great many points have been argued in regard to the abolition of the death penalty. There are those who would oppose the sanction of death arguing that the penalty of life in prison would be a fitting alternative. This brings up a great quandry. What exactly is life in prison? The current definition of life in prison qualifies one for release from prison in as little as 25 years. The abolishonists state that one could be sentenced to prison for life, and it could be appropriate if the variable of parole would be removed. On the surface that would seemingly work. But the surface is a small area of the whole issue.
The term "Life In Prison" would translate to the convicted inmate sitting in prison until the occurence of a natural death. But what of a prisoner who is in the process of dying? Do we provide that inmate with medical care to elongate his life? What of the prisoner who requires artificial life support? Would we propose to keep that inmate on such devices for an unlimited time. Or, conversely do we simply withold that medical care because he is sentenced to a term of "life", and nature must take it's course and be the executioner of that sentence? If a prisoner has a heart attack in his cell, do we simply tell that inmate that "no medical care can be provided, because you are supposed to die in prison"?
What of care for the terminally ill inmate? Do we provide that inmate complicated medical support, possibly including, but not limited to, artificial respiration, or even constant resusitation,
What of the inmate that dies in the clinical sence? Do we resusitate that inmate, only to have that inmate claim that he has died in prison, and because he has been resusitated, he is eligible to go free? The term of "Life Without Parole" has not been defined. The lack of that definition makes it unacceptable as a judicial sanction.
THE SANCTITY OF LIFE AND THE PRESERVATION OF THE DEATH PENALTY
The sentence of death is not an easy one to impose, and certainly a more difficult one to execute. We all as humans have a primal fear of death. The imposition of death has no variables. It is final. You do not recover from a death. these facts do make it difficult for a human to ceremoniously cause the death of another. However, the alternative is to find ourselves in a constant quandry as to when nature has executed the sentence of life.
This is further complicated by the fact that the physiology of death is not a pretty sight. The methods required to humanely end life are not easy to undertake. Electrocution, while proven to be painless, leave burn marks on the top of the head, and on the leg. Hanging stretches the neck considerably. Gas can leave a condemned inmate coughing and gasping for air before he finally lapses into death. The Firing Squad, still an option in Utah, has it's own obvious merits in the unpretty department.
Lethal injection has been found to be something of a more comfortable method to view, but even it has it's inherent problems
However grim these methods are to view, None can be more grim to view than a person slowly dying of natural causes. In the end, nature is the cruelest executioner of all.
WHY DO KILLERS KILL?
Recently I had occasion to view several interviews with condemned inmates. On viewing these interviews, I found the following insight to apply pretty much universally. This statement is simply my own insight, but if there is any reader that would have any arguement, I'd love to hear from them.
Do killers who intentionally kill do so out of hate? Well, how many people have developed a hate for a cheating spouse? How many people have developed a hate for the IRS because they were hit with a penalty or a tax lein? How many people have developed a hate for the parking attendant that scratches the new Porche that they spent the last ten years kissing the boss's ass in order to get the promotion needed to afford that Porche? It would seem to me that if we all killed just because we hated, the streets would be full of unfaithful spouses, IRS agents, and clumsy parking attendants. Nope, such is not the case. We can hate, and yet still differentiate right from wrong. We all know that it is inherently wrong to kill.
WHAT IS OUR COMMON BOND AS HUMANS
AND WHEN DOES ONE STOP BEING A HUMAN?
Those who seek victims to kill must first undertake on every important step. They must DECIDE to kill. Once that decison is arrived at, and the killer executes that decision, he has crossed a very important boundary. He has forever instilled in his mind that life no longer holds that ultimate value that the rest of us hold on life. We hold the life of another in such great esteem because we think of our own mortality, and it creates the greatest of anxiety. When the killer hunts and kills, that "checkpoint" of anxiety has been forever overridden by his or her own desire to end life. That killer has lost an important part of his own humanity, and can no longer be viewed as a human in the sence that we view each other as humans. The killer is no longer complete as a human. The killer has become a predatory animal, and now must be dealt with in the same way that predatory animals are treated. We as a society have a responsibility to each other to defend each other from predatory animals. We have chosen to meet that responsibility by choosing to execute judicial sentences of death upon them. We have found that it is unacceptable to let them share the same earth that we do, and we must continue to do so.
WHY ARE THOSE WHO PARTICIPATE IN EXECUTIONS NOT MURDERERS
AND WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT FROM THE PEOPLE THEY EXECUTE?
Commentary added 3-15-2000
We now take the information from above and we ponder this question. Executing a condemned person achieves the same result as the actions that that person now stands convicted of. The greatest differences are not in the results of the execution, but the inspiration for carrying that execution out. When looking at the issue of the motives, not the result, the difference begins to make it's self known, and we find that there is a wide varience between the murderer and the executioner(note: in this commentary, the word "executioner" is construed to apply to everyone involved in the procedure, not just the guy who "throws the switch".)
we must examine the issue of primary motivation. The murderer has selected his victim using ulterior points. The murderer has a great deal to benefit by killing his victim. The murderer sees oppertunity to gain finances, power, control, or a satisfaction for bloodlust. The murderer sees the victim as an opportunity to satisfy a craving. The murderer also sees the opportunity to satisfy that craving for whatever it is from that above list, and calculates the method to obtain said satisfaction. The murderer usually does not stop to weigh the price of satisfying that lust, either to himself, or his victim, the victims family, or society in general.Conversely, the executioner spends a great deal of time pondering the repercussions of ending the life of the condemned. The few murderers that might stop for a split second to weigh that price find that price acceptable considering his or her gain. This point reflects back onto the "COMMON BONDS AS HUMANS" paragraph above. The murder, having decided that his or her actions are warrented, regardless of result or consequence, acts on that information.Conversly, the executioner cannot decide, but rather must be told that his act of executing the condemned is warrented. The murderer commits the act of killing by whatever means it takes to complete that act. It is the phrase "whatever it takes" that securely bonds the person to the title.
Another point we examine is the relationship to the murderer to the victim's relatives. The murderer fails to fully realize, either by his or her own inherent quality, or a simple failure to stop and realize, consequence to the victims relatives, while the executioner realizes the impact of the execution on the condemned's relatives, and allows visits with the condemned, and allows the relatives to be present at the time that the condemned is put to death, allowing the condemned some comfort in the hours of his or her demise. I don't remember my sister's killer calling me up and saying "Errol, I am going to kill your sister. You wanna come and spend the last moments of her life here to comfort her?" Once again, the difference is more clearly stated and defined, and the dynamics of execution are far more clearly illustrated as being different from the dynamics of murder. This quality again further separates the murderer from those qualities that bonds us as humans.
We now examine the parties tasked with the responsibilities of executing judicial sentences of death. We note that the significant keyword here is tasked. From the most direct person involved in this task, the executioner, who is tasked by the Department of Corrections to carry out the job of "throwing the switch" (in Florida, that is actually a key, but you can read about all that later on)we next examine The Department of Corrections who has been tasked by the sentencing judge, who has in turn been tasked by a jury of 12 people, who in turn have been tasked by society. We immediately begin to see that the life of one has been rigorously examined for it's merits by a lot of people, all of who have differing views, and they all decided that the condemned's acts are so heinous that the condemned's life must be ended. This is certainly the most basic chain of tasking. The reality of it is that by the time the condemned is executed, his or her life will be judged on it's merits by literally hundreds of thousands of his or her societal peers. We can examine the scrutiny of that group of peers by examining the appeal of Daniel Remeta just days before he was executed for a murder committed in Florida.
Upon reaching a decision to impose the ultimate sanction, the process of executing the inmate carries far beyond the simple 10 minute act of ending that inmate's life. The protocol of the act of execution further separates the condemned from the executioner even further in that the executioner does not decide the method. Rather it is instead decided by the legislature of the state in which that inmate is to be executed. The decision is based on the method that produces the least pain and causes the quickest death, as opposed to the murder who made his decision with recless disregard for how his victim is killed, or how much pain is caused in the process of inflicting death. Indeed, in some cases, the murderer chooses to have his or her victim suffer a painful and excruciating death, often suspending the act of ending the victim's life for as long as he or she can, and once again feeding his or her lust for inflicting pain.
On examining the role of the Department of Corrections we find that the great majority of their role is not so much in ending the life of the condemned, but actually PRESERVING and MAINTAINING that condemned person's life, health, an well being. when examined next to the approximately 10 to 20 minutes the Department of Corrections spends ending the life of the condemned, the thousands of hours spent supporting the inmate's life by clothing, feeding, and maintaining healthcare of that inmate, we certainly see that the Department's role in executions is certainly microscopic in comparison. Certainly the condemned did not spent thousands of hours clothing and feeding his or her victim, nor did the murderer do anything in responce to the victims cry to preserve the life in question. Indeed the Department of Corrections employs many full time personnel to do nothing but listen to the cries of the inmate, and respond with the means to meet the inmate's needs. Again, we see a great divide in the characteristics of the murderer and the executioner. In short, the murderer has exercised his prerogative to end life, and the executing party has conversely exercised it's prerogative to maintain the life of a convicted killer in as healthy and as comfortable a condition as that executing party could possibly maintain that life. The difference is clearly defined, and we now see that "Murderer" and "Executioner" are two clearly separated and defined entities who should NEVER be confused with each other.

YOUR COMMENTS ON THE ISSUE
LINKS TO MY REFERENCE MATERIAL You can clickHERE for the ultimate 1000 link page on the death penalty issue.or you can go directly to prisons in other states. Washington's site is interesting in that it features history of hanging, still an option there. Utah's and Deleware's sites are also pretty interesting in that they include the history of the firing squad, still an option there. All three have gone to Lethal Injection as the default protocol.
Read some of the frivelous BULLSHIT that keeps Florida's system of justice clogged, and keeps brutal murderers alive, and allows them to continue to haunt their victims. Thankfully, all the featured inmates (who, by coincidence were ALL convicted of multiple homicides, and all the slayings were particularly heinous and brutal) were executed, and DETERRED from ever killing again. This site is posted on a harvard University server. I certainly hope that Harvard student gets a better education on the people featured than he or she currently has. Amazing how some people can allow the convicted murderers victimize them the way that those murderers had victimized the people they killed and the victim's families.

DONT FORGET TO BOOKMARK!
I found this page on the internet, and I thought it needed a little truth added to it, so I opened up the ol'HTML editor, and did a little touching up on the page. See how Lancelot Armstrong's page looks on the internet today!
You can also read Fred Leughter's Unified Protocol on how condemned inmates should be executed, and how their products can do the job of putting a condemned killer to death. Fred Leuchter is the recognized authority on the execution of death, and is the owner of a Boston company that specializes in
supplying prisons with the hardware and technology to put condemned inmates to death. The State of Florida does adhere to this protocol, both in the case of electrocution (I am told that the electrodes are Leuchter products) and in the case of Lethal Injection. (The components used in the lethal Injection procedure are also fine Leuchter Products.) You can even use the address and phone number to order your own working Electric chair, but that won't be a cheap endeavor, and you'll have to explain to them why you need an electric chair installed in your house. I tried to order one, but was declined because my address didn't correspond with a correctional institute.Provided state law has no problem with it, I will also be posting Florida's new Lethal Injection Protocol, as well as the old Electrocution Protocol, so be sure to bookmark here, and check back every three minutes. (I'm kidding, you can go live yor life.)

The state of Florida has aanounced that BENNIE DEMPS was the third convicted killer to be executed by Flprida under it's new Lethal Injection protocol. Demps was executed one week later than scheduled. Demps was convicted of murder as a result of his role in the slaying of another inmate. Dempa was previously on death row for a conviction years before, but was taken off when the death penalty was declared unconstitutional. Had he not taken part in the slaying of the other inmate for which he was convicted, Demps would possibly have been paroled.
