MY PETS

MY COMPANION

My favorite breed of dog is retriever either Yellow, black or Chocolate Labrador, Golden or Chesapeake. Even temperament, smart, trains well, has all the best traits.

I have had Dogs all my life and often say the Good Lord was not fair when he gave our faithful companion such a short time to share with us in this world.

My first dog was an Airedale Terrier named Pat.

I still have a scar on my wrist gotten when, as a youngster, I was trying to keep Pat from fighting.
I have owned Airdale Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Heinz 57s, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Boxers, Labrador Retrievers both black and yellow, Irish Setters of show quality. One female lacked only a couple points of champion, made the mistake of breeding her.

Back in '40 -'41 my wife and I owned a black Cocker Spaniel named Shadow for short, which I showed in The Westminister Dog Show and other local shows. He had earned several points, toward champion, he was stolen from my wife while I was over seas in '41 to '45.

My present companion is a Black Lab about three years given to me by one of my grandchildren Troy, for both of whom I feel blessed and enjoy.

For several years my Wife and I ran a Country School For Dogs. A training kennel for dogs. After a few years of operation my wife and I decided the people needed more training than the dogs. :-) Especially parents. Their children would run around, uncontrolled creating havoc. Making it very difficult to concentrate on Dog and Customer

A Few Pointers

When your dog decides to go the other way and is still in sight - squat down to the ground whistle and call him/her by name get her/his attention when he/she stops and turns to look at you, pat the ground, pick up a stick or anything handy, toss it in the air -not at the dog- make him/her think you want to play. It will come running back to you to get in on the playing. Imediately pet it make a big fuss over it give it a lot of praise.DON'T SCOLD IT So the next time when you call she/he will remember and come running when called. When he/she does make a big fuss over it. Dogs remember these things and are anxious to do what gets them a lot of attention.
You will hear people say dogs don't remember. I beg to differ, they do remember. They don't associate in their memory unless it is immediate. In other words your praise or punishment must be when it happens, not sometime after it has occurred.

Your dog is getting the habit of running away when you let it out. When you find it don't give it a ride home in the car - make it walk home - if necessary get out of the car and walk it home. If you ride it back it will run away again to get a ride. Yes it is a nuisance, it takes extra time. If you can't spend extra time and you think it is too much of a nuisance, don't start because you will never accomplish any training.

Learn to give a command once and follow through to see it is done. That is a very common mistake. Saying something to the dog - giving a command - and returning to what you were doing. Paying no further attention. The dog then goes on doing what it wants, not what you told it to do.

Get your pet spayed or neutered

Man phoned Vets' office asked "How much does it cost to have my dog fixed?" Attendant asked "Spayed or neutered?" Man replied "Which ever is cheapest." :=)
