Custom Shackle Brackets
This project came about somewhat out of boredom. I was looking for something to make in the garage one day and I thought I should have some sort of tow point up front. I had some left over steel from my transfer case drop and my bumper mounts so I thought I would try some shackle mounts. Now to be completely honest I am not sure how strong these things world be on an angled pull. The shackle mount itself is a piece of 1"x2"x1/8" box tube. It has been beefed up a bit but I am still watching the front bolt hole. I also haven't used these things yet at all. My friends and I have only ever needed a strap once or twice. I do know for sure that they will not rip out of the "frame". These things mount way back past the sway bar. The sway bar bolts are part of the mount and my custom bumper mounts help alot also. I am planning on someday building a front bumper that would use the shackle mounts but relocate the shackle a little higher. I had to do ALOT of hacking at my front bumper to make it all fit. I don't mind it since I already had to weld mounting tabs to the thing for my brush guard.

As you can see in the pictures, they really do extend far back on the frame. That is part of the reason that I will reuse them for my bumper. I would like to make a winch bumper and I want to make sure it is plenty beefy. The material I used for these brackets I had in my scrap pile. The plate is 1/8" and the triangle supports are 1"x1" box, I don't remember the thickness. The tupe that I put in the shackle hole is 1" thickwall conduit. I had to ream the ID of it a bit so the shackle pin would fit. I think it took about 4 hours to design and build the first one and about half that for the second one. I also think they make the front end look really tough now.
