Memory Book Data: The Fun Stuff

After the web site was completed and personal invitations began to be sent out over the world wide web to Ulrichs' 175th birthday celebration in L'Aquila, it was decided to compare the response of the computer invitations to those that had been sent out in previous years using regular mail.

For the past 20 years, 150 pieces of regular mail per year was usually the limit, with at most 10 responses annually. The response came in the form of a newpaper or newsletter announcing the birthday or printing a feature article on Ulrichs; a person acknowledging the receipt of the mail; or an individual requesting further information.

Sometimes the data base information was not in the original e-mail; therefore, the numbers did not always add up exactly.

The following are some of the results since Celebration 2000 went online.

Numbers of E-mails, of Respondents, of Cities, and Countries

More than 10,000 persons worldwide were informed about the CELEBRATION 2000 event in L'Aquila by means of direct E-mail.

As of this writing, 840 persons from 314 cities in 43 countries responded between the date the Ulrichs' page went online (October 1999) and the middle of August 2000.

Of 840 respondents, 36 persons said they would try to visit Ulrichs' grave in L'Aquila in August or some other time; of the persons sending E-mail, two persons went to Ulrichs' grave in May (although 20 other persons actually were at the gravesite on Ulrichs' birthday). Independently, two went earlier in August.

Kudos

As responses arrived, it became interesting to read how many people used the same word to describe the Ulrichs' website. Perhaps you will find them interesting, too.

Of the 840 e-mails received, 276 persons said "thanks." Three stated that it made them feel proud. Five gave "congratulations!" Four said the website was cool or kewl; one felt it was awesome; two said it was fascinating, another two were amazed. Four thought it was nice, five said "wow," and two thought it was wonderful. Twenty-three exclaimed "great;" one found it beautiful, and four were impressed.
