WHAT IS AN EARLY INTERVENTIONIST?
An early
interventionist is a nurse who is specifically trained in child development, and
who works with children from ages 0-3 who have special needs. I use a
developmental assessment called the HAWAII EARLY LEARNING PROFILE (HELP) This
assesses 6 areas of development which include:
GROSS MOTOR: How a child is using large muscle skills such as
walking, crawling or climbing. TOP
FINE MOTOR: How a child uses his fingers in a pincer grasp to
pick up tiny objects or color with crayons. How he uses manual
dexterity.
COGNITIVE: How a child is able to solve problems and use his
mental skills. This includes things such as stacking blocks, doing puzzles, or
finding hidden toys etc. TOP
LANGUAGE: How a child communicates and understands language.
Expressive language is how a child is able to express themselves through signs,
words or verbalization. Receptive language is how a child understands and
follows what is asked of him.
SELF HELP SKILLS: How a child can feed and dress
himself.
SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SKILLS: How a child expresses his feelings and
how he gets along with others.
