Sherren Baughman

Sherren grew up in Albion, Michigan and remembers being introduced to art in high school. She had a very supportive teacher who encouraged her to draw and paint.

When Sherren enrolled at the Bowling Green State University, her father insisted she take a business major, so she took art as her minor. Unfortunately during her freshman year, her art professor so ridiculed and humiliated her that Sherren dropped her minor in art.

After graduating with a retailing degree, Sherren went to work in a training program in Jacobsons. Soon she was an assistant buyer, later became a buyer of " After 5 Apparel" for 11 Jacobsons stores in Michigan. In 1972, she was transferred to the Florida stores as a buyer/merchandise manager for the Jacobsons Florida operation.

At the ill timed death of her father in 1982, Sherren left Jacobsons to run the family business, an Independent Oil Production Company.

It was not until 1988, when Sherren moved to Boca Grande, that she was able to find time to take up watercolors again.

She enrolled in a watercolor class in Arizona, studying with Larry Weston, a well-known western painter, and then studied with the watercolor teachers at the Boca Grande Art Alliance for several years. Sherren feels, "my life is better when I paint, because then I begin to really look at everything."

Sherren is an active volunteer and was president of the Boca Grande Art Alliance for 3 years. After the Alliance received a generous grant, they rented an office, bought a computer and office equipment and Sherren became the first full time Director. She reorganized and computerized the Alliance, and obtained the tax-free status, that had previously been denied the organization.

Sherren is still trying new techniques and feels much knowledge can be gleaned from art books. She finds she paints in a sporadic fashion. Some how she finds time to paint, while still giving many hours to the island’s organizations. Last year she chaired two large and very successful events, the Boca Grande Art Alliance Auction and the Green Gala for BIPS.
