Wrestlers create history BY PEDRO F. FONTEBOA LAKELAND, Fla. --

Three Miami-Dade schools recorded their first state wrestling champions Saturday night at The Lakeland Center....

Krop's 119-pounder Chris Thorne (34-3) defeated Naples' Lazara Rua, 6-5 to become the Lightning's first state champion in any sport. ``This is a thrill for us,'' Krop coach Eric Phillips said. Krop finished fourth in the team standings with 57.5 points behind Brandon, which won its state-record 12th overall team championship.

Dr. Krop downs Broward teams

— St. Thomas found a new opponent in its district this season and it turned out to be a formidable one as Dr. Michael Krop, the lone Miami-Dade County team in the eight-team District 16-2A, emerged the champion, by a narrow margin over St. Thomas. Dr. Krop took a two-point lead into the evening finals.

Krop was up by five points heading into the 171-pound showdown but the Raiders’ Brian McCaffery picked up a 2-0 win over South Broward’s Eric Hartz in a rematch of a county final to cut the deficit to a point.

That meant the Raiders needed a win by Bob Edwards at 189 but Edwards lost an 8-2 decision to Amster Fertil of Northeast, ending St. Thomas’ hopes.

“We just have to come back and win the regional next week,” St. Thomas coach Frank Patacsil said. “If we can win the region and win the state, no one will remember that we didn’t win the district. I’m disappointed we lost, but we had a lot of guys wrestle well individually and we qualified 11.”

St. Thomas suffered a loss before the first match got under way. Jeff Wimberly, the team’s 103-pounder, dislocated an elbow last week so the Raiders missed out on points in one weight class. The Raiders also had several wrestlers get first-round byes, so they didn’t get as many points as they would have had they wrestled a match.

“You can’t look back at all the what ifs,” said Patacsil, whose team had won 10 straight district titles. “Those things happen. Krop wrestled well.”

St. Thomas boasted five individual champions each. The Raiders got wins from Guy Gibson (103), Scott Lawson (125), Troy Schick (130), Jon Wimberly (145) and McCaffery with Gibson and Lawson both getting pins.

Broward’s undefeated wrestlers had no trouble. Gibson improved to 30-0 while Miramar’s Elijah Brice upped his record to 23-0. Both are defending state champions.

Hallandale’s Davin Joseph moved to 26-0, defeating Dr. Krop’s Prince Floyd who is 20-2 with the only two losses coming to Joseph who has been slowed by a sprained ankle suffered in the county tournament.

Some of the individual matches were as close as the team outcome. Hallandale’s Anthony Newell took a 5-3 win over Vic Davanzo of St. Thomas at 152, avenging a sudden death overtime loss to Davanzo at the county tournament. Eddie Barrows, also of Hallandale, managed a 4-3 win over Krop’s Brett Lieberman at 140.

Other weight class champions were Assaf Regev (103) and Chris Thorne (119) of Krop, Gareth Smith of Hallandale (160) and Marc Dorvil of Fort Lauderdale (215).
