Pippins to America
Approximately 805 years after the death of Pepin, King of Italy, a many greats grandson of his was born. In the year 1615 Matthew Pippin was born in the little town of Blois, France, about 90 miles southwest of Paris. On 16 April 1635, a 20 year old French Hugenot, Matthew Pippin, was transported to the Island of Providence in the Bahamas on the ship "Expectacion," Cornelius Billinge, Master. Somehow Matthew made his way to Northhampton County, Virginia. Northhampton County lies at the tip of the Delmarva Pennsula, and its county seat is Eastville. There is evidence, I know not what it is, that indicates Matthew's brother William came to America about 1638. I do not have any further information on him at this time. Deed wills show that Matthew had land actions in 1655, 57, 66 and 68. A writ of Authorized To Care For was recorded on August 30, 1657, and a mortgage on his corps was recorded on 25 March 1656.
Matthew had a son named Edward Addison Pippin, born about 1660 in Northhampton County, Virginia. No records are found that show much about Edward Pippin except that he had a son named of Matthias Pippin. He was born about 1690 in Warwick County, Virginia, an area that is now Hampton and Newport-News, Virginia. Matthias migrated to the northeast corner of the state of Maryland and died in 1763 in Cecil County, Maryland. The county seat of Cecil County is Elkton, Maryland. Records show that he paid taxes there in 1752. Matthias had three children, two sons and one daughter. His sons were John and William, and the daughter's name was Ann Pippin.
Dates of birth are not known, but William married Christian Murry on May 30, 1730, and he died in Cecil County, Maryland, in 1770. Ann married Charles James (no dates known). John, my greats many times grandpa, moved to Wilmington, Delaware (DE), at some point in his early years. This means he moved about 25 miles northeast of Elkton, Maryland along the major thoroughfare to Wilmington. There he married Rebecca Emery about 1724 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, and they had six children. The first child, Joseph, was born about March 1725, in Wilmington, DE. Following his birth, John and Rebecca moved to Queen Ann's County, Maryland (MD), which is due south and across Kent County from Cecil County, on the Delmarva Pennsula. The county seat of Queen Ann's County is Centerville, Maryland. Joseph married Margarit McCoy on January 22, 1746, in St Luke's Parrish, Queen Ann's County, MD and he died in 1791 in Edgecomb County, North Carolina (NC). Robert, was born about 1727 in Queen Ann's County, MD, and died in Caroline County, MD, before 1765. John, Jr. was born about 1730 in Queen Ann's County, MD, married Elizabeth Mountique on April 11, 1751, and died in 1765 in Edgecomb County, NC. Rebecca was born about 1731,(no other dates known) and married an Emery. Benjamin was born about 1733 in Queen Ann's County, MD, married Charity Montique on December 16, 1756, and died in Edgecomb County, NC. Our ancestor Soloman, Sr was born in 1735. John Pippin, Sr recorded a will in October 30, 1762, and died before March 4 in 1763 in Queen Ann County, MD.
Soloman Pippin, Sr, born in 1735 in Queen Ann's County, MD, married Amy in 1764. Perhaps with the proceeds from John Pippin's estate, Soloman and his brothers, except for Robert, took leave of Maryland and migrated south to Edgecomb County, NC, in about 1765. Solomon was about thirty years of age at the time. Edgecomb County lies astraddle I-95 south of Halifax County. The major town is Rocky Mount and the County Seat is Nashville, NC.
Solomon served in the Revolutinary War, although no specific records are in my possesion. He and Amy were to have children. The children, I believe, are as follows: Solomon, Jr., born about 1756; Abraham, born about 1758; Lucretia, born about 1760, married to John Bunt on 17 May 1806 in Edgecomb County, NC, and deceased Nov 1846 in Edgecomb Co, NC; Joshua, born about 1762 in Maryland, married to Mary Newsom and deceased in February 1800, in Edgecomb Co., NC. The first Federal Census taken in 1790 in Edgecomb County, NC, lists Solomon Pippin, Sr and members of his family. They are: Solomon, Sr; wife Amy; two slaves; son Abraham and his wife, and two sons under 16; Solomon, Jr, his wife and two sons under 16; Salathel; Solomon, III; and two daughters. Brothers listed are John, his wife, Elizabeth Mountique, a son over 16, two daughters, and one slave; Joseph, Sr, his wife Margarit McCoy, one son under 16, four daughters and three slaves; Benjamin, his wife Charity Monteque, a son under 16, five daughters and three slaves. Also listed is a nephew probably Joseph, Jr, wife, son under 16, two daughters and no slaves.
Solomon Pippin, Sr. died in Edgecomb County, NC, in 1798. Edgecomb County May Court settled and recorded the estate of Solomon Pippin, Sr. in 1800, in Edgecomb, County, NC. (Inventory and account of Estates, 1798-1800, page 383.) The estate amounted to 869.37.7 1/2. That is 869 pounds sterling, 37 shillings, 7 1/2 pence (British money). This amount was divided equally at 66.18.3 1/4 between Amy (widow), Solomon, Jr., Abraham, Lucretia, Mary, Joseph, Noah, Rebecca, Olive (slave ?) Elijah, Benajah, Happy and Clary.
