SMITH

(1)James Madison Smith was born 1825 in Jasper, Marion, Tennessee.  He married Martha Matilda Davis.  They had at least six children: Melvina born about 1854 in Tennessee, Martha Elizabeth born about 1857 in Alabama, John William and Joseph Alexander, twins born September 15, 1861 in Benton, Marshall, Kentucky, Mary, and Nancy born about 1864 in Kentucky. James died in 1864.  Martha married Henry C. Jones October 06, 1867 in Marshall County, Kentucky.

    (2)Melvina Smith ("Vinney") married ____ Quarles and lived in Grahamville, Kentucky.

    (2)Mary Smith married William H. Quarles. She lived in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky and helped to establish a Methodist church there.

    (2)Martha Elizabeth Smith married Charles Holland.

    (2)Joseph Alexander Smith was raised by his Uncle, William H. Davis, in Metropolis, Massac, Illinois.

    (2)John William Smith married Ella Davis Newman on January 03, 1886 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  Ella Davis Newman was born March 07, 1865 in Woodville, McCracken County, Kentucky.  She died February 22, 1947 in Kevil, Kentucky. John William Smith died February 12, 1931 in Kevil, Kentucky.  John William Smith was one of the original investor's in Kevil Bank when it was around 1906.  He served as President of the bank from the time of it's formation until his death in 1931.  During the Depression Kevil Bank was one of the few bank where none of its depositors lost their money.   John William and Ella owned a 190 acre farm just outside out of Kevil.  They are buried in Old La Center Cemetery, in La Center, Kentucky.  Their tombstone reads, "They are not dead, they are just sleeping".  They had 9 children: Bertha Ray, James Acton, Mary Jane, John Thomas, Ruby Zeal, Dewey G., Aubrey Warren, Vernon, and Bishop (Bishep) Hopewell Smith.

Below is an actual check written by John W. Smith to his sister Bertha Smith Martin on May 17, 1913.

          (3)Bertha Ray Smith was born January 21, 1888 in Kevil, Kentucky.  She died December 16, 1940   She married Jess Edward Martin on May 15, 1912.

          (3)James Acton Smith was born January 06, 1890 in Kevil, Kentucky.  He died June 18, 1952 in Kevil, Kentucky.   He was a Veteran of World War II. He married Elizabeth Roberts in September 1934.   Elizabeth Roberts was born in 1905 probably in McCracken County, Kentucky.  She died in 1955 in the Paducah Hospital, a resident of Ballard County.

          (3)Mary Jane Smith was born August 29, 1890 in Kevil, Kentucky.  She died December 25, 1948.  She married Clifton Breckenridge Scott on December 1911.

          (3)John Thomas Smith was born January 12, 1892.  He died January 08, 1964.  He married Margaret Fraizer.

          (3)Ruby Zeal Smith was born December 28, 1895.  She died October 17, 1982.  She married Wallace Jerrell on August 1914.

          (3)Dewey G. Smith was born in March 20, 1898 in Kevil, Kentucky.  He died March 23, 1970 in Kevil, Kentucky.  He married Myrtle Perkins on December 27, 1919.

          (3)Aubrey Warren Smith was born April 22, 1902.  He died October 21, 1966.  He married Edith (Edie) Nina Owen.

          (3)Vernon Smith was born 1904.  He married Allie B Kindred.

          (3)Bishop (Bishep) Hopewell Smith was born in 1906 and died in 1961.  He married Sophia Elma.
