Red Shouldered Hawk

Red Shouldered Hawk ~ Buteo lineatus ~ Red Shouldered Hawks are dark with reddish patches on their upper back that make it look like they have red shoulders. The underside is light and it has a dark brown tail. The Red Shouldered Hawk will feed on many types of prey including small rodents, amphibians, and reptiles. They catch their food by perching on a high branch and looking with their good eyesight. The talons have the power to kill any animal that the hawk catches. Baby hawks are helpless when they are born, but when they are a month old, they are ready to leave the nest.

The Red Shouldered Hawk lives in the sawgrass habitat.
