Anhinga

Anhinga ~ Anhinga anhinga ~ The anhinga is a water bird without oil glands to waterproof its feathers. When it swims it's feathers get wet, which helps them dive and find fish. When it gets out of the water, it must spread its wings to dry so it can fly. The anhinga spears its prey with it's beak, their strike is often so powerful that they have to swim to shore and pry the fish off ther beak by rubbing it against a rock. Adult anhingas are black with white on their backs and wings. They are known as the water turkey because of their long tail. They are also known as snakebird because they can be seen swimming with just their head and neck above water.

The anhinga lives in the slough habitat.
