Hi R. L.,
My niece gave me the website on Dinsmore. I went to Dinsmore Elementary
School from September 1943 until June 1950. My teachers were : Mrs.
Coursey, 1st grade; Mrs. Barker, 2nd grade; Mrs. Long, 3rd grade;
Mrs. Soto (this is the same teacher you had for fourth grade, I think.),
4th grade; Mrs. Bledsoe, 5th grade; Mrs. Holten, 6th grade; and Mr.
Becker, 7th grade. I then went to Kirby-Smith Jr. High for the 8th
and 9th grades; then to Andrew Jackson where I graduated in 1955.
I went to Kings Road Baptist Church on Pitts Road.
I knew Al Bowie and we went to school at Dinsmore together. I knew
Russell L. LLoyd, and his sister Joanne. I knew Dennis and Tommy Roberts.
I was close friends with the Hygema brothers Guy, Walter, Paul, Johnny,
and Curtis and their sister Betty Lou who owned Hygema House Movers.
I knew Janet Montgomery who married Terry Phillips who was a close
friend of mine. She lived on U. S. 1 and Terry lived on Moncrief Road.
I knew of Pitts Battery Shop on Pitts road and took several old cars
there to get batteries, starters and generators over the years.
Sorry to say, I don’t remember you or any of the Dukes.
My mother had an account at Higginbotham’s Grocery during WWII and
he delivered groceries to our house. I lived on Sibald Road of Trout
River Blvd, east of U. S. 1 between U. S. 1 and Lem Turner Road. My
best friend in high school was Vic Thomas who retired from the Sheriff’s
Office a few years ago. He still lives on Trout River Blvd the last
I heard which was about 5 years ago.
I fished in Nine Mile Creek and Trout River. I was baptized in Trout
River.
I remember Mr. Snyder too. He was a fearsome person to us when we
were kids. He had a very deep bass voice and thundered when he talked.
I got a spanking from him for fighting with a boy named Donald Roundtree
when I was in the 1st grade. I also lost a baby tooth in the fight.
We were in love with a little girl name Mariam Simmons. I remember
the Pickets who had more kids that Carter had pills. The only name
that comes to mind right now is Donny Picket who was a twin.
Well anyhow, that’s a few of my memories. I don’t have any pictures
of the old school except in my mind’s eye.
Thanks for the memories.
Harold ( Harry) B. Mills
