June 1999  Pieced Sashing
Page 2

Since I wanted to include the block that the Pieced Sashing was made from,  I ended up with a lot of graphics, so I split this month's entries onto 2 pages.

Go to Page 1  to see the other half of the quilts and blocks for June.

Please, be patient!  Over 50 graphics are on this page, so it will take a little time to load.

If you are ever stumped for a sashing or a border that will really "offset" your quilt, you just might find some ideas here.
The block that accompanies the quilt is the block that was used in the sashing.

Thank you to the 35 participants who contributed to the clubEQ June Challenge.

June's Challenge - Pieced Sashing
In EQ4, with just a click of Ctrl+click on sashings in our quilts,
we can set blocks to create pieced sashings.
We can do the same to set blocks into the cornerstones of the sashings, too.
The challenge this month is to find some innovative ways to
use sashing blocks in your quilt layouts.
It will be interesting to see what effects you get when you take a square block and skew it into a sashing rectangle.

I was given a packet of Broken Dishes blocks by a friend who had participated in an internet block swap but didn't want the blocks after awhile. What a friend! So, I designed this quilt and am calling it "Mission Dishes" since the sashing looks like furniture from the Mission/Arts & Crafts style era.

The main block is from the EQ library...called Bird's Nest...there are 3 other blocks I designed to work with that block...one for the sashing and 2 for the first border. The border blocks were put in on Layer 2 and then sized with the Graphic Pad to make them the correct size...needed them to "complete" the design.

I chose the block used, from the drunkards path catagory in EQ4. I then used the drunkards path curve on two corners of a square for the sashing.

Original pieced sashing quilt design. The pineapple main block from EQ4, has to take a back seat, while the designs created by this simple sashing, ala "Storm at Sea", take center stage.

Blocks: 6" / Sashings: 3"
Lots of possibilities with this design, depending on how you color it. I found it looked better if the sashings were half the size of the blocks.

Named because it reminded me of winding curves amidst many roads. I only used two blocks and two colors, using the flip tool to manuever the blocks around.

Quilt is based on a top that I saw in a quilt shop window. I was drawn to the similarity to a double wedding ring, but the piecing was so much simpler. The block can be pieced in quarters using paper piecing, and the sashing could be paper pieced or strip pieced.

Just playing around with my variation of the EQ monkey wrench block got me this! Great Caesar's Ghost! I used the same block for main blocks, sashing and corners, just rotating some of them.

Since the pieced sashes were the stars of the show,
I decided to leave the blocks themselves plain.
