debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:10:50 PM)
i know im not ready for that...thank goodness i dont have that for a few years yet
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:12:05 PM)
any ideas why they are doing an IEP for the rest of this year then a week later one for middle school??
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:12:31 PM)
that dont make much sense to me....what reason did they give you? is he on an IEP now?
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:13:15 PM)
yes, on one now -because of periods
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:13:30 PM)

debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:15:27 PM)
hi Josiane *hugs*
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:15:47 PM)
Hi all....
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:15:48 PM)
we modify it each fall with the new teachers ask for their input after month of school so they feel a part of it
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:16:08 PM)
easier to get them to follow it
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:16:27 PM)
i see modifying it at the beginning of each year...but why next week for the end of the year? or did i misunderstand?
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:17:01 PM)
they keep the same ending date on it
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:17:15 PM)
this is when we got the IEP
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:17:34 PM)
im lost faith...im sorry.........do you always do the IEP twice a year?
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:17:42 PM)
yes
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:18:08 PM)
why dont they extend the same one for the full year unless there are requested modifications?

We are 2 hours south of Buffalo. Very rural.

Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:31:34 PM)
we had to have most of our testing done outside of the school system before they even acknowledged cj had a problem.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:31:37 PM)

for families of children with CAPD
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:34:55 PM)
Betty, I understand that IDEA guidelined have changed and children no longer have to fail to recieve supports. Debbie is that right?
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:00 PM)
yep saw it on the CAPD listserv
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:05 PM)
cj's teacher says he is only now where he should have been when he started first grade. she is recommending he be retained this year so he doesn't continue to feel overwhelmed when he goes into the second grade.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:12 PM)
this is the place Kathy
Betty (ID=31) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:36 PM)
They still wont give me an IEP, but I finally got a 504, which will help with the MCAS testing
elizabeth (ID=35) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:40 PM)

Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:44 PM)
I just had mom son's IEP yesterday . it was suppose to be done in nov.
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:52 PM)
i had that recommadition also but have a son right behind him and they would be in the same grade
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:35:57 PM)
Sarah recieves help through a 504 plan because my school says she scored one point too high to qualify for help
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:36:03 PM)
hi elizabeth
elizabeth (ID=35) (Mar 16, 2000 8:36:11 PM)
hi
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:36:40 PM)
Betty,....under a 504 you can get the neccessary services
elizabeth (ID=35) (Mar 16, 2000 8:36:57 PM)
How do you get them to do a 504 vs IEP (I assume)?
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:37:00 PM)
I got Johnny all the testing he needed and he is classified but because I didn 't want him pulled out of the classroom no one wanted to do the iep. I live in a small town with small minds
elizabeth (ID=35) (Mar 16, 2000 8:37:15 PM)
Big towns have small minds too
Betty (ID=31) (Mar 16, 2000 8:37:16 PM)
well, they do the classroom modifications...but not small group help. I got that through Title 1 funding
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:37:45 PM)
yes they do i lived in Orlando who would do nothing for my son
Betty (ID=31) (Mar 16, 2000 8:38:07 PM)
But she still does not qualify for SPED help.
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:38:20 PM)
it wasn't until i moved to a small town that i got any help
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:38:24 PM)
Well they wanted me to write the iep so I did and now i think they are sorry. but I did get what i wanted which was the use of a computer for note takeing and writing and a caculator for math and an fm system
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:38:26 PM)
KMan, well here my daughter was first in special ed for 3 yrs, her evaluations were done by CSE, then bad ear infection in August led to a hearing loss, thus hearing aid. To get the FM for her and hearing services I had to reevaluate her by HHVI (Hearing...Visual Impairement) After they approuved the FM, she is now getting hearing services by HES (Hearing Educational Services) 2 times/wk
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:38:28 PM)
I didnt want to pull sarah out of the class either....although she is on a "pull out" reading program now
elizabeth (ID=35) (Mar 16, 2000 8:38:31 PM)
Isn't CAPD a learning disability and therefore quals as sped?
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:38:42 PM)
we're being told that cj needs exceptional student education for reading and speech but his math is "low average" for his age group.
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:39:36 PM)
JOsiane, how old is she now and what type of classroom is she in?
Betty (ID=31) (Mar 16, 2000 8:39:50 PM)
I have Katie pulled out for reading and now under title 1 for math and additional reading help. She's out quite a bit for a kid with no IEP
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:39:58 PM)
some of his math is it just the time it takes him to process what needs to be done
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:40:03 PM)
elizabeth....just because a child has a disability it does not mean they qualify for special ed......it has to impede their learning
Betty (ID=31) (Mar 16, 2000 8:40:35 PM)
yeah, that was their argument to us . they said Katie was effectively learnign but not coping effectively
Betty (ID=31) (Mar 16, 2000 8:40:48 PM)
whe was having melt downs about being behind.
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:40:48 PM)
what about educational support services?
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:40:49 PM)
debbie, the reason I didnt want johnny pulled out is because most of the kids they stick in sp. ed here are ADHD or OCD and are very distracting to him. He is not now or has never been a disapline problem but I know if he was placed in a situation like that he would follow the leader.
elizabeth (ID=35) (Mar 16, 2000 8:40:50 PM)
It seems to me that CAPD does impede learning bec. processing verbal info impedes classroom learning
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:41:00 PM)
Brendon only qualifies for language arts but have modifications in rest of subjects due to processing speeds
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:41:01 PM)
the other problem elizabeth is that most systems will not commit to labeling capd as a "learning disorder" no one really knows what to call it
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:41:43 PM)
elizabeth....you haev to be able to show how it impedes learning.........i agree with you..dont misunderstand me
Betty (ID=31) (Mar 16, 2000 8:41:49 PM)
well I have to put my 3 year old to bed. see you guys later.
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:41:52 PM)
faith, what kind of modifications?
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:41:56 PM)
sorry KMan, catching up She's 5 1/2 in regular K
elizabeth (ID=35) (Mar 16, 2000 8:41:58 PM)
So how do you get around that problem (not classified as a Learning disorder ) in Sec 504--I'm new to this?
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:42:21 PM)
50-100% of the class and homework needs to be completed
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:42:24 PM)
Josiane, how is it going in K?
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:42:34 PM)
extended time to complete tests
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:42:44 PM)
Kathy, i was told that if i put sarah is spec ed they would lower the standards to meet her...not help her meet the standards

hi robyn
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:15 PM)
i don't want the standards lowered...i want cj to meet the standards.
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:16 PM)
Debbie you mean in the spec. ed class room or just served by special ed
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:23 PM)
all that we put into his IEP
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:23 PM)
Hi Everyone
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:30 PM)
exactly tammy......think carefully.........ask bill about it
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:37 PM)
faith, who determines how much of the class and homework needs to be done. We're swamped every night with catching up.
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:38 PM)
hi robyn
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:43:50 PM)

if we feel he has had enough then we stop only if it meets the district rule of 10 minutes per grade level
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:44:42 PM)
wow, we don't get any breaks. Just tears and whining every night.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:44:51 PM)
hi Kh
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:44:53 PM)
well I don't think they can really do that if you dont agree with it on the IEP. Is your child capable of doing the work? if so then he/she should be expected to do so with modifications.
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:44:55 PM)
teacher usually only has him do 50%
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:45:00 PM)
Well we had the parent teacher meeting today....Teacher said the change in her is remarkable. (but she only started getting hearing services last wk and still waitting for FM, takes forever here in NY!!!)
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:45:26 PM)
cj's teacher says to limit him to 30 minutes per night...but he gets very upset if his homework isn't done before he goes to school the next day.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:45:38 PM)
Elizabeth.....i wouldnt quit insisting on help
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:46:13 PM)
need to make sure in ss and science they have all answers to worksheets that might be on tests
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:46:27 PM)
Josiane, what type of things do the hearing services involve?
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:46:40 PM)
how do i get the modifications enforced? cj has the fm now but i'm still fighting for preferential seating, a desk away from the door and windows, etc.
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:46:43 PM)
the last modifications the teachers hate one week notice of tests
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:46:52 PM)
Modifications dont nessiceraly mean lowering the standards just things like seating, help in note taking, aids in math etc.
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:46:58 PM)
keep moving up the ladder
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:47:08 PM)
Tammy......request in writing they review his IEP
Kathy (ID=34) (Mar 16, 2000 8:47:19 PM)
tammy you shouldnt have to fight for that is it in the iep
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:47:25 PM)
phonic awareness, letter sound, coping skills, listening skills (to name a few)
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:47:48 PM)
reading, rhryming....
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:47:54 PM)

KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:48:08 PM)
Josiane, is this done by an audiologist or itinerent teacher?
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:48:15 PM)

opps I gotta go and make cookies for the cookie party tomorrow. nice chatting with youa ll
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:48:34 PM)
cj's iep only covers speech...it hasn't been modified yet to cover CAPD. Debbie, how long after I request iep review before they have to provide it?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:48:40 PM)
night Kathy
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:49:12 PM)
not exactly sure..but will check Tammy
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:49:28 PM)
FM by the audiologist, HES by a "hearing teacher"
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:49:37 PM)
when i requested the reevaluation it was done fairly quickly
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:50:05 PM)
brendon's is done with in 2 weeks
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:50:14 PM)
everytime i talk to anyone they keep giving me a date "sometime in April".
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:50:20 PM)
our 3 year olds IEP is coming up soon. We want her to receive individual speech and not group speech. This will be inconvenient for them. Any suggestions.
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:50:41 PM)
then all of a sudden they will want you in tommarrow
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:50:43 PM)
she also checks the FM, shows her how to use it (and her reg teacher too)
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:51:09 PM)
kh, does she need articulation or language therapy?
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:51:12 PM)
Josiane, how much hearing loss?
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:51:18 PM)
both
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:51:28 PM)
mild
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:52:02 PM)
try talking to her speech teacher. cj's has been very cooperative so far.
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:52:09 PM)
what ype of services are you getting KMan? Do you have an iep?

Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:52:35 PM)

MaryOK (ID=38) (Mar 16, 2000 8:52:41 PM)
Hi Guys!
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:52:47 PM)
Tammy, thanks. I havn't done that yet.
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:52:51 PM)
right ear that is
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:53:42 PM)
KH....it is so important to make sure you maintain an open line of communication with the teacher....
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:53:45 PM)
i try to limit cj's time in loud places or even avoid taking him if he's having a bad day already.
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:53:59 PM)
yes, to IEP. We had teacher of the deaf, but that was dropped. Now they don't want us to pre=teach of have books at home. Only have FM and educational audiologist 2-3 x /year and extended time for tests. Preferred seating sometimes.
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:54:24 PM)
hard when he wants to go to a hockey game or movie even
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:54:26 PM)
debbie, our communication so far has been with the Pre Primary Impaired classroom teacher. We expected the speech therapist to be at the last meeting and she wasn't.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 8:54:31 PM)
You are right Debbie.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:54:58 PM)
KH have you tried to arrange a one on one with her...?
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:55:09 PM)
Does she have a severe loss?
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 8:55:12 PM)
KH you can always request to have her there
faith (ID=27) (Mar 16, 2000 8:56:08 PM)
have to go and get ready for boy scout camping
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 8:56:11 PM)
CJ actually likes going to the movies...but that is about his limit.
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:56:22 PM)
She has a complete conductive hearing loss in right ear probably moderate/ severe to severe. She had a choleateatoma that destroyed the small bones in her ear.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:56:35 PM)
debbie, not yet. We have a similar problem with communication with our 8 yr olds speech teacher. Unless we ask, she doesn't update us. (quarterly report cards only.) Very good therapist though. Her professor in graduate school had CAPD. So she is familiar with the disorder.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:56:41 PM)
KMan,,, I am getting ready to send you the invite to join the mailing list.....does anyone else want an invite to join the mailing list for this chat?
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:56:55 PM)
thanks
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:57:03 PM)
can have surgery to repair right?
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:57:41 PM)
thanks
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:57:42 PM)
no, there was too much destruction. They did a radical mastoidectomy.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:58:51 PM)
KH di you want an invite for the list?
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 8:58:52 PM)
=( mine has same problem with the bones, but can have surgery at 12 yrs
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:59:03 PM)
debbie, yes. thanks.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 8:59:33 PM)
what is your email?
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 8:59:40 PM)
We're afraid there may be a recurrence, because she has lost more hearing. Won't find out until app't on Ap[ril 5th. It returned on other time. High recurrence rate.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 8:59:47 PM)

KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 9:00:16 PM)
no, congenital origin.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:00:24 PM)

Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:00:33 PM)
so she shouls get hearing services weekly!!!!
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 9:00:35 PM)
for my daughter that is.
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 9:01:34 PM)
They say she doesn't show enough of a lag and that they aren't obliged to over-compensate.
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:01:54 PM)
she has an FM?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:02:24 PM)
KH although your speech teacher is familiar with capd i would think it still important to attend meetings or to communticate due to fact each child is different and so are their needs
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 9:02:29 PM)
yes.
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 9:03:12 PM)
With the increased loss, probably not as effective as it should be. Audiologist suggested she turn up setting.
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:03:31 PM)
How did you get the FM and how long has she been using it?
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 0016, 2000 09:04:14 PM)
She has used FM for 1 1/2 years. It took quite a battle and reports from 3 audiologists to get it,
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:04:18 PM)
Debbie, my 8 year old attends a charter school. The charter school is not responsible for my 3 year old until she is kgtn. We have her enrolled in the local public school's PPI class to receive her speech therapy right in the classroom. We preferred individual speech but was told she would respond better in group due to her age.
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:04:43 PM)
through the school system?
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:04:52 PM)
Josiane, yes.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:05:01 PM)
is PPI something similar to Child Find for children too young for Kindergarten?
KManBAM (ID=29) (Mar 16, 2000 9:05:04 PM)
We paid for hearing aide and they bought the FM link.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:05:37 PM)
debbie, I'm not familiar with Child Find. PPI is the special education preschool for 3-5 year olds.I
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:05:49 PM)
so Tammy......how many phone numbers does CJ have?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:05:57 PM)
same thing it sounds like
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:06:19 PM)

KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:07:29 PM)
Debbie, our charter school has been great. They are even adding carpet to his room next year to reduce background noise. I'm looking forward to my 3 year old starting there in a couple of years.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:07:33 PM)
hi maggy
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:07:54 PM)
for those of you who missed the announcement earlier...Dr Jan Wasowicz from Earobics will be joining our chat next Thursday night to answer questions regarding the Earobics program
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:08:10 PM)
that's wonderful KH
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:08:21 PM)
what is earobics?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:09:07 PM)
Earobics is a program that many parents have used with great success......
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:09:13 PM)
in children with capd
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:09:23 PM)
the website is www.cogcon.com
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:10:34 PM)
has any one here used Earobics?
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:10:47 PM)
not me...
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:10:52 PM)
mine did
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:11:01 PM)
no. we are looking into FastForward now.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:11:29 PM)
Debbie, I have a meeting with my son's school next Thursday. I am updating his 504. I have to let the teachers know that they are not following through on some of the accomodations. I keep a log on when they do. Do you have any suggestions on how to approach them with out putting them on the defense.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:11:40 PM)
IM trying to get someone from FFW here......but right now they are agreeing to answer questions via email if anyone has any questions send them tome
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:12:51 PM)
Debbie, i miss the FF listserve, were you on it?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:13:31 PM)
hmmmm.....Robyn it's a very fine line....you dont want to upset them..but yet you have to do what you have to do for your child........I would probably delicately ask them if there is anything prohibiting them from complying....
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:13:36 PM)
yes i was josiane....
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:13:41 PM)
debbie, thanks. I have purchased Away We Go for our 3 year old and am concerned that she doesn't seem to be very interested in the program. She is a very intelligent little girl and is playing with Pre K and kindergarten programs now. I think she likes the graphics even though she doesn't always get the answers right.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:14:15 PM)
the graphics on the Away We Go seem slow. It doesn't hold her interest for very long.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:14:28 PM)
Debbie, I'll give it a try.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:14:49 PM)
I've personally not used the Away We Go.........although we had good success with FFW
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:15:08 PM)
what part of 504 are they not following Robyn?
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:15:44 PM)
are you going to do FF2 Debbie?
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:16:02 PM)
It's pretty expensive compared to Away We Go. We are going to pursue whether or not the flex account (pre tax dollars) will cover this.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:16:06 PM)
make sure you let the teacher know you do appreciate her efforts on the area that are being reinforced.....
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:16:48 PM)
i dont have plans to at this time Josaine.....although I am planning on using Great Leaps and hopefully Earobics
KH (ID=37) (Mar 0016, 2000 09:17:0010 PM)
What is Great Leaps?
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 0016, 2000 09:17:0010 PM)
Away we Go is kind of like Earobics

To help my son learn strategies for memory, one of the teachers was to check everyday before he comes home if he has everything he needs. In two months they've done this twice. And believe it or not, I still had to run back to the school for missing items.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:17:51 PM)
Robyn...does yoru son have a daily checklist?
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:17:57 PM)
Robyn, this has been a problem with my son as well. I do day care. It's difficult to bring six children in the school with me!
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:18:12 PM)
Yes, but he forgets to check it
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:18:22 PM)
Great Leaps is a program recommended by my psych for reading fluency and speed
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:18:32 PM)
That's where the teacher comes in.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:00 PM)
Let the teacher know this is an area of concern........
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:01 PM)
where can you find out more about it Debbie?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:09 PM)

Robyn, My son has a daily planner. I check it when he gets in the car. If he forgot something, I send him in. sometimes more than once.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:32 PM)
hi marie
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:33 PM)
I've added a lot of links on my site the last few days as well as a search engine
marie (ID=40) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:38 PM)
Hi
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:39 PM)
hi Marie
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:19:51 PM)
we use a daily planner also
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:20:25 PM)
KH, My son has a daily planner also. I am not home until a half hour after he arrives.
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:20:34 PM)
what kinds of things do you put on the planner?
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:21:01 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:21:05 PM)
Robyn, that makes it more difficult. One of the downsides of charter schools is that we have to provide transportation.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:21:25 PM)
The teachers put his assignments and I put reminders
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:21:29 PM)

Tammy, our son's planner was provided by the school and have each subject listed. He is to write in his homework. I then initial it when it's done.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:22:20 PM)
Kh, I wish I had more time. I teach full time for Philadelphia and I have two younger children as well.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 0016, 2000 09:22:24 PM)
Hi lujidi & samonnesmorn
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:22:45 PM)
Tammy...Sarah puts in her homework and test dates......it doesnt always work....but helps
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:23:18 PM)
all kids in Sarah's class use the planner....it's provided by the school
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:23:20 PM)
Robyn, that sounds busy. I do day care so I'm busy - but busy at home.
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:23:34 PM)
Can anyone give me some advice on going to an initial meeting to develop an IEP? What questions can I ask?
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:23:42 PM)
Debbie, Mine too
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:23:58 PM)
cj has his agenda and his teacher provides a list every monday of what the homework is going to be for the week.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:24:29 PM)
samonnesmom...what services are you seeking?
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:24:45 PM)
Kevin's teachers sign his agenda each day. He also has a visual processing problem
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:25:01 PM)
i really wish i knew a good parent advocate we could get to come and talk in here......anyone have suggestions?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:25:53 PM)
KN and KMAN your invite has been sent......
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:26:04 PM)
what services do i need to push for for cj? i know the preferential seating, extended test times, seating away from doors and windows...anything else?
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:26:05 PM)
We are looking at language processing therapy and voice abuse therapy.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:26:22 PM)
just a moment...be right back
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:26:32 PM)
this is my first time here, and maybe you have answered this question before, but i just recently found out my son has capd, and the school is helping by having test done, but do you know what the reason or purpose behind a pyschological test is ?
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:26:36 PM)
what is voice abuse therapy?
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:27:17 PM)
i was told that the psychological testing was to see if cj had any other learning disabilities on top of the capd.
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:27:20 PM)
Both of my CAPD children had the pysch testing done. It ruled out autism & ADD.
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:27:48 PM)
Samonne has a hoarse voice and her vocal cords stay swollen so they are going to try to teach how not to stress her vocal cords. She habitually talks loud.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:27:51 PM)
It also allows you to start an IEP if necessary
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:28:47 PM)
thank you
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:29:55 PM)
Lujidi, remember they can not do anything without your consent
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:30:17 PM)
Tammy that is the same questin I have
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:30:48 PM)
for me the psychological evaluation for Sarah showed me exactly where she was at academically and what areas she needed work in as well as providing recommendations
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:31:42 PM)
I know. I had him tested first at the mailman center at um and then I sat with the counselors at school and they are all pushing his tests but alot of people including his pedr. don't know much about capd.
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:32:01 PM)
i thought there might be something they weren't telling me.
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:32:54 PM)
how do you educate conselor, teachers etc
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:32:59 PM)
i have to admit iam cautious of schools testing for capd....the tests they give are an overall general tests.....not specific for capd......when the school tested sarah they told me she was perfectly normal with no signso f auditory processing problems
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:33:11 PM)
I find that he is very good at math, simple addition, he's is kindergarten but he cannot handle reading very well
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:33:34 PM)
They pushed the psych testing for my oldest when he was five. I didn't know at the time that they were concerned about autism. I found out after the testing was done and the Dr said it wasn't a concern. I was surprised this was even a concern.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:33:38 PM)
Deb, The same thing happened to me.
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:33:41 PM)
samonnesmom..what i did to educate them was to make them each a little "book" about capd....sheets from websites and such....along with test results for sarah
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:33:51 PM)
cj is great at simple addition and subtraction. once reading gets involved, it all goes downhill...
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:34:18 PM)
samonne is the opposite
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:34:29 PM)
tammy the older cj gets the more word problems and such he will be doing in math..that s why it is so important to get help young
KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:34:51 PM)
debbie, good idea. I just did the same thing with both of my oldest teachers and my three year old's PPI teacher. One teacher approached me and was very thankful as it gave her a whole new understanding of my son.
samonnesmom (ID=42) (Mar 16, 2000 9:35:03 PM)
shoul i take the book to the meeting with me
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:35:04 PM)
exactly KH
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:35:09 PM)
yes samonnesmom
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:35:31 PM)
if somoene does not understand capd..how can they affectively help your child?
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:35:45 PM)
debbie, i've completed the "books" for cj's educators and have them waiting for the next iep meeting so i can pass them out. i've already given one to his teacher and i made a spare one that i want placed in his permanent file.
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:36:01 PM)
His inital test was done by professional not the school. since they recommended certain things for the teacher to do to help i went on the net and printed out sheets for his teacher and she's been so good at
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:36:12 PM)
i've done the same tammy.............at the beginning of each year i greet the teacher with a "book"
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:36:39 PM)
It helped my sons teachers have an understanding of CAPD
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:36:42 PM)
tammy.....i want to contact bill about a district wide awareness program...are you in with me?
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:37:13 PM)
sounds like so many of you are on the right track!!
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 9:37:20 PM)
helping him. she works with him one on one, but we are waiting for the physch test in order for his speech and language teacher to know at what level he's at in order to help from there
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:37:31 PM)
in so many cases we are responsible for educating the educators
Tammy (ID=32) (Mar 16, 2000 9:37:48 PM)
sure!!! i did ask him who we needed to contact about a teacher's workshop on capd. he said we needed to start with the ESE coordinator.
Robyn (ID=36) (Mar 16, 2000 9:38:03 PM)
Debbie you'll be happy to hear the school district I work for just did an inservice for all the speech and language teachers on identifing CAPD
debbie (ID=26) (Mar 16, 2000 9:38:04 PM)

KH (ID=37) (Mar 16, 2000 9:38:47 PM)

or are they taught to deal?
debbie (ID=43) (Mar 16, 2000 9:59:51 PM)
lujidi.....there are things we can do to help our children overcome capd just as overcoming any obstacle......but i wouldnt want to say they will outgrow it
debbie (ID=43) (Mar 16, 2000 10:00:40 PM)
there are definitely remeadiation technicques out there to lessen the impact on our child's life
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 10:01:27 PM)
debbie, does speech get better? i've seen him improve but i worry cause i am still basically the only one who really understands what he says
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 10:02:13 PM)
he uses alot of of hand language so teachers and family understand but he really has no freinds his age cause they dont know what he says
debbie (ID=43) (Mar 16, 2000 10:02:33 PM)
with sarah we understand what she says....i would have to say once a child begins to process sounds better and actually understand the sounds speech would improve too...but i would seek speech therapy if that is a concern.
debbie (ID=43) (Mar 16, 2000 10:03:05 PM)
each of our kids are all different although they are all affected by capd........each one needs something different for remeadiation
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 10:04:12 PM)
he's been in speech since school started, i was told that tests indicated that he lacked vocabulary and articulations. his speech is that of a 3yrs 9 months child although he is 5 and a half
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 10:04:28 PM)
but i have seen improvement
debbie (ID=43) (Mar 16, 2000 10:05:05 PM)
that is likely due to the capd........im sorry if you already said.......but does your son have an FM?
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 10:05:18 PM)
is he in Kindergaten?
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 10:06:18 PM)
no. i am waiting for the pscyh eam to be done. than after that tests they told me they would switch him from speech to language and given a fm if needed in the classroom. yes he is in kindergarten
debbie (ID=43) (Mar 16, 2000 10:07:03 PM)
the combination of the fm and ffw have made a world of difference for me...
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 10:07:50 PM)
they are really trying to help. seems that in trying toi getr him help i contacted the head of the speech and language department at the school board and when people hear her name they move quciker

debbie (ID=43) (Mar 16, 2000 10:08:45 PM)
last year we had to write 15 sentences every monday night......i use to hate mondays.........always ended in tears!
Josiane (ID=30) (Mar 16, 2000 10:08:55 PM)
=( i wanted to see how she does with the FM
lujidi (ID=41) (Mar 16, 2000 10:09:49 PM)

Bev........how old was your child when dx?
Karen1 (ID=44) (Mar 16, 2000 10:18:38 PM)
Her class has24 students in it At the catholic school there would be 11 students in the class
Karen1 (ID=44) (Mar 16, 2000 10:18:59 PM)
I think the smaller class size would help her
Bev (ID=45) (Mar 16, 2000 10:19:13 PM)
5 years old...and it is still horrible...but, certain catholic schls will work with u
Bev (ID=45) (Mar 16, 2000 10:19:40 PM)
