Allen Iverson-Biography Page 3
February 13, 1993, Iverson and a friend, after a high school game walked into a bowling alley. All heads twisted to see him, since he had become the Bethel High School hero. It was almost as Elvis was walking into Shoney's. Elsewhere in the alley, a brawl broke out upon racial lines. Someone caught the fight on tape, which did not show Iverson at all. He later testified that he left as soon as the fight broke out. Two witnesses said Iverson threw a chair at a lady, causing a gash, requiring stitches. Of the 50 or so people in the fight, half of which were white, only 4 were charged, all black teens. One was Allen Ezail Iverson, who was tried as an adult even though he had no previous criminal record. He was charged with "maiming by mob" and sentenced to 15 years in jail. After 5 months in jail, he was let loose early, due to the case being dropped. " I had to sit there and listen to people lie, and nothin' I could do about it, " Iverson said. He sat in the Newport News City Farm, reading about himself in the paper, crying. "I thank those people, realy. I thank those writers for the things they wrote. They made me stronger. I learned so much about people." Because of that event Allen went from one of the most wanted higih school athletes, to someone who didn't even deserve to go to college. At least that's what some people thought. Once Coach John Thompson of Georgetown University talked to Allen, he gave him the oppurtunity to become a Hoya."If you're a Hoya, you're family. Even the guys who played way, lonf before me, they showed me love when I first got there." Allen used his first year to adjust his style to the college game. He was named Big East Player of the Year, which he also had the next year. the second year, he not only improved his game, but he led the Hoyas to a 29 and 8 season. In 1995, Allen played in the World University Game with other college greats, like Tim Duncan and Ray Allen. Not to anyone's suprise, they won the gold medal.
