The members of Green Day are being cartoon-ized

as we type for an episode of Fox's animated series King of the Hill next season. The band will play an annoying garage band called Cane & the Stubborn Stains, which features, in a playful switch- around, drummer Tre Cool on vocals and guitar as Cane, singer/ guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong as Face, the bass player, and bassist Mike Dirnt as Zeus, the drummer. In the episode, titled "The Man Who Shot Cane Skretteburg," the show's lead character Hank Hill gets into a paint- gun war with Cane, the lead singer of the band. A spokesperson at Fox, www.foxworld.com, says that the nine- month- long animation process has begun, but an air date has not yet been set..

Green Day's Growing Pains

Green Day's new album finally has a name. The California band decided on Nimrod, but even their publicist can't figure out why. He will, however, say that the material on the album is a tad "more mature" than past Green Day albums. But don't worry, kids, it's still cool. The slightly older perspective apparently has more to do with some personal stuff that the Green Day guys have been going through, rather than any weird desire to change their musical style. A spokesperson for the band confirms that both Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt have marriages on the rocks, and that having serious relationships has sobered all three members considerably. The price you pay for growing older.

~Green Day Album To Feature 'Classic' Punked-Up Pop

Band surfaces with new album and plans to play L.A.'s Viper Room this weekend.

Billed as Nimrod, Green Day will end their one-year silence on Saturday, July 19 when they emerge from the studio to perform a not-so-secret secret show at actor Johnny Depp's Viper Room, according to their Reprise Records publicist Jim Baltutis. The group, who have been busy working on their follow-up to 1995's Insomniac, haven't played live since last August and picked the date as a warm-up for their gig at the Mt. Fuji Festival in Japan on July 25-26. "They're finishing up recording in the next few days, then they fly to L.A. for the show, back up here (San Francisco) to see their kids and then off to Japan," said Baltutis, who also revealed the names of five songs that will pop up on the new album, Nimrod. The songs, "Prosthetic Head," "Hitchin' A Ride," "Good Riddance," "Jinx" and "Haushinka" are just a portion of the more than 30 songs the group has written for this album, which, as previously reported, will be considerably longer than their past releases. "You'll hear horns, maybe some strings, but you'll definitely have close to the full 72 minutes possible on a CD," Baltutis said, adding that the album will be mixed during August and the first single should be out around Labor Day, with the album now penciled-in for a late-October release. "I heard the track "Uptight" the other day and it's just classic Green Day"...

GREEN DAY GET NUTTY IN L.A. Billie Joe Disses Dave 'Fucking' Grohl

Rather than waxing ecstatic about Green Day's pop/ punk prowess, a few phrases can better summarize their last- minute warm- up gig at the Viper Room in L.A. on Saturday: "Fuck you, assholes." "Can we get a few more beers up here?" "What's the next song?... Shut up!" and "Drinks are on our good friend Johnny Depp." Needless to say, singer/ guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool were their usual smart-ass, beer drinking, carefree selves. Playing for over an hour, they packed their set with most of their hits (sans "Walking Contradiction") and scarcely tested out their new material, including "Jump" and "Hitching a Ride," from their forthcoming album Nimrod, due in late October (probably Oct. 21) on Reprise. (They billed themselves as Nimrod on the Viper Room marquee too.) that dog's Petra Haden even played violin on one song. The real highlights of the show lay in Armstrong's apparent drunkeness: Several times, he "blessed" the audience with his Heineken. He dissed Foo Fighter Dave Grohl when, after playing a few songs from commercials, such as the "Tony the Tiger" theme, a fan suggested he do the Mentos song. To that, Armstrong replied, "I'm not Dave fucking Grohl. I'm a guitarist, I'm a drummer. I'm a grummer." And he mocked Prodigy with this nonsensical musical moment: "I'm the Firestarter too... I'm the cookie cutter" sung in what seemed to be a Chinese accent. The happy campers further worked the over- packed room into a frenzy by teasing the audience with snippets of their usual cover songs: Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train," and Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane." They also led into "Longview" with a few chords from Marilyn Manson's "Beautiful People." Regardless of the many "Fuck you"s and "Shut up"s to the audience, the band members were quite kind to their fans. At one point, Armstrong had the side door opened, grabbed a kid from the end of the line, and brought him inside the club. The somewhat frightened -- but clearly elated -- kid, was then stripped of his eyeglassed and forced to stage dive. Throughout the night, the singer allowed other fans onstage to stage dive and sing or rant into his mike. Expect Green Day to start a tour in September or early October; however, it's not determined if they'll begin their trek in the U.S. or in Europe.

Go West, Green Day Fans

SPIN magazine has confirmation that Green Day are scheduled to play a secret gig this Saturday night, July 19th, at the Viper Room in Los Angeles. The band is in Los Angeles as we spill this, working up songs for their forthcoming album, Nimrod, which they'll preview at the gig. It's kind of a warm-up for their set next weekend at the Mount Fuji Festival in Japan. New songs that will probably make the set list include: "Prosthetic Head," "Hitchin' a Ride," "Good Riddance," "Jinx" and "Haushinka." We don't know about you, but we're planning on getting in line now!

GREEN DAY'S BACK, AND THEY DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK

Green Day is set to return to record racks this fall with a new album, but are the guys worrying about how they will be received? "I don't really give a rat's ass what anybody thinks of this record because I know I like it," the group's frontman Billie Joe told MTV News during a break in the studio. After busting out in a big way with 1994's "Dookie" (and helping to jump start the 90's punk pop movement in the process), the band found a cooler reception for its next effort, 1995's "Insomniac." Well aware of how fleeting chart success can be, Green Day won't be sweating sales figures when "Nimrod" arrives on October 14, but that doesn't mean they're slacking in the studio.

"This record, more so than any other record, I think we sort of bled over this one a little more," Billie Joe said. "I mean, this is a record I've been wanting to make since the band pretty much started." The band takes a few surprising musical turns on "Nimrod," and rolls out a few lyrical tricks as well, like on the bouncing track "King For A Day" , which covers some off-beat subject matter.

"This song is about dressing in drag," Billie Joe explained. "The idea behind it is try to get fraternity guys singing like an oi song." Having shot the album's first video, "Hitchin' A Ride," last week, the band should it the road next month in support of "Nimrod."
