The Tallahassee Area Foster Parent Association, Inc., a [501(c)(3)] not-for-profit organization that was established in May of 1996 to work in partnership with area providers (Dept. of Children & Fam ilies, Florida Baptist Childrens Home, Childrens Home Society, Camelot, and others) and organizations (HOPE FOR KIDS, Tallahassee 25 Club, The Community Alliance for Children and others) 1)to be an advocate for area foster, adoptive and at-risk children, 2)to recruit, educate, support and network with area foster parents and 3) to work with the community to provide resources for area children and their families. The TAFPA is working in partnership with the Florida State Foster Parent Association to inform the Legislature and the Public of the needs and concerns of foster children and their biological, foster and adoptive families and children and families at risk.We are always in need of foster parents and homes, supplies for the children(ie. clothing, food, personal hygine supplies, school supplies, toys, educational toys and games, etc.) and resourses (legal, educational, mental health and medical services, mentors, baby-sitting services, etc.)for the children and their Families. The TAFPA has recently set up a list server for Florida foster parents to network and share foster parent experiences and questions with each other. 2001 NATIONAL FOSTER PARENT ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE 31st Annual Education Conference

This upcoming conference will be held in Ohio. More information is available on the conference by visiting the NFPA Website You won't want to miss it - there will be great training, many foster parents to network with, and lots of exhibits!!

PLEASE JOIN US FOR OUR NEXT FPA DINNER AND MEETING. WHEN?

The TAFPA meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. Every month we will meet at 6:30 PM for dinner, 7:00 PM for the training. It is very important to RSVP to Nancy Hagen at 488-0506 as we need a count for dinner and so that there will be enough volunteers for the children.

FOSTER CARE FUND A HELP

The Department of Children & Families and Ounce of Prevention came to the help of foster parents this last Christmas. As announced at out November FPA meeting foster parents were allowed to use the fund for educational Christmas gifts (one of the advantages of attending FPA meetings). This was a great help for foster parents and a blessing for our kids. The fund paid up to $200 for these gifts. Those parents that used the fund will have to deduct that amount from the $200 per year cap. Thank you C&F and Ounce! If you have questions about the fund or you need a request slip, contact your child's worker. In 1999 the annual cap per child was increased.

TAFPA MEMBERSHIP DUES

2002 FPA membership fees are due. The dues are $20 per couple, $10 for single parents. Please contact Darlean Patterson to pay your dues.

GARAGE SALE FOR THE KIDS

We are looking for parents to visit local garage sales in their area to ask the sales owner if they would be willing to donate good baby to teen items to the association for foster children. Ken and Phyllis Hayward have done this on a couple of occasions and have picked up some very nice items. Business cards are helpful for this, please contact Ruth if you would like to help with this.

CHILDREN'S MISSIONS

Please ask your clergy if they would like to help with children's missions- we have a need here locally. If there are any questions on how to help, have them contact Ruth for details. Ruth can arrange for someone to talk with your pastor or congregration.
