SHOTTON STATION MEMORIES

Roger Carvell from Hitchin, Hertfordshire writes:

I used to make much use of Shotton station, going to Liverpool for work and shopping with my mother. We used to get the Crosville bus, Route A1, A2, A7 or F8 to Shotton, all 'proper' well-maintained double deckers for which the company was famous. The old station booking hall was then at street level, under the railway bridge. I do know that in 1970-1 an aeroplane passed under that bridge with an inch to spare -not flying! It was being towed to Kelsterton Tech as we called it, from Hawarden.

As a footnote to this article, Damien Burke writes on his website:

Displayed at the front of Deeside College for many years in all weathers, XA460 was once in good condition but the Welsh climate and the sea air have not been kind to her and it can only be a matter of time before this aircraft deteriorates to the point where it is no longer safe to be kept on display. She's covered in algae, shows signs of corrosion, is damaged in places and the canopy frames are so rotten she's open to the rain - no doubt the cockpits are total disaster areas by now. She really is a sad sight.
