TEDDY BEAR FUN

FUZZY TEDDY BEARS- Mix cornmeal with brown paint and pour into shallow pans. Cut bear shapes out of brown paper. Have the children glue on the bears and sprinkle with brown cornmeal, shake off excess. Or you can use dried tea leaves or coffee grounds.

TEDDY BEAR LACING CARDS- Cut brown posterboard into teddy bear shapes and punch holes around the edges. Then let the children lace pieces of yarn through the holes.

A SPECIAL TEDDY BEAR- Here's a warm and fuzzy way to display your helper's name each day. For each child, personalize a construction paper heart cutout and punch a hole in each onne. Every morning select one child to be the helper of the day. Then thread the corresponding cutout onto a length of yarn. Tie the yarn around the teddy bear's neck and display this fuzzy friend on your desk. Your little ones will be anxious to see who the helper is each day.

TEDDY BEAR MASKS- To make; cut out the center portion of a paper plate. Draw two half circles on the center portion to represent bear ears; then cut. Staple or glue the ear cutouts to the outer rim of the paper plate and paint the mask. After the paint dries, paint the inner portion of each ear pink and glue a craft stick to the bottom of the paper plate. Then using an eyebrow pencil, draw whiskers on each child's face and a triangular shape on the nose. Have them hold the masks up to their faces for bear-y nice teddies!

LEARNING THE ABC'S- Cut 26 teddy bear shapes out of posterboard and write the letters "A-Z or "a-z" on them with a felt tip marker. Laminate. The let the children practice putting the bears in alphabetical order.

TEDDY BEAR FELT BOOK- You will need felt squares, felt scraps, needle and thread, glue and a pair of scissors. Cut a bear shape and a pocket shape out of felt scraps. Glue three edges of the pocket shape to a felt square. Put the bear shape inside the pocket (do not glue bear). The set out four additional felt squares. Cut a variety of shapes out of felt scraps and create a different scene for each square. Glue the shapes to the squares. Put the felt squares together with the bear page on top. Sew the felt pages together on the left hand side. Let the children take the bear out of the pocket and move it from page to page. Have the children make up a story about the bear on each of the pages.

VISITING TEDDY BEAR- Assemble a teddy bear kit that includes a stuffed bear, a photo album, construction paper, crayons or markers, and instructions for use. Each friday send the bear kit home for weekend with one child. Ask the child with the help of parents to make up a short story about the bear's visit at their house and to illustrate it on a sheet of construction paper. Have the child add the story to the photo album. Each time a new story is added to the book read it to the children. This is a wonderful way to promote a sense of community among the families in your program.
