Kim and Warren's Reunion
The way it all started
Once upon a time
(before there was any)
You said
"Sing to me!"
with your lips just a bit pouty
(because you were concentrating)
and I asked myself who is this lady?
Who is this lady I still ask myself
like I always have, once upon a time and forever
with your lips just a bit pouty and even while I sing
I think the answer is in knowing the Way it All Started.
So if this were the same song
(which it is you know, it always was
once upon a time and now and forever)
and if I were there just now to kiss those pouty lips
and to hold you close while I sang
so you could hear the deep vibrations
in my chest, the Love for the stars
and the glow from the moon...
and if I were there just now
would that be the way it all started?
since when you asked me to sing
and I learned that I could were times not that very different
from each other (like Me and You)
and since that was then and now and forever
I wonder
looking at the rain falling
and the stream flowing
and the tide,
coming and going
what exactly is the Way it All Started?
And I sing about it, like a single
arbitrary
accidental
drop of rain.
One drop falling only on you --
one freckle on your smooth shoulders
one breeze across the desert. And I wonder,
from that time whenever it was how did I make it
two drops?
then four or was it eight
like sixteen or so lined up in rows of thirty-two
sixty-four times and one-hundred and twenty-eight
wondering each time what was the Way it All Started
somewhere in a cloud of stars (like science says, huh?)
somewhere in a storm of creation, somewhere arbitrary and so accidental
that you could call it magic (if you were inclined, by some
accidental or arbitrary reason to believe, for just a second,
in such things)
or you could call it dirt, you could call it mud with rain splashing in
like they call it the Milky Way or they call it the Sky, even,
when they are young and haven't forgotten where they really live
and so I sing to You about The Way it All Started
because you asked me to sing
once
or twice
or maybe four
times or was it eight?
and it is so exponential, like clouds
building over mountains, swirling backwards
upside down. Moving out from the middle like
the Big Bang with no beginning because the Way
it All Started
was sort of like this
and sort of like Nothing
and sort of like a Math Book with
your name carefully printed across the inside cover
Kimberly
was how you wrote it then,
with your lips nothing but pouty (because
you were concentrating)
believing somewhere that there was a reason
and when I sing to You
it is of times like these, times like those,
real things without times because time is arbitrary
and accidental, and (like I said)
almost magical if you are inclined to (for one
magical, arbitrary minute) believe in such things.
Or maybe the Way it All Started is like
the time when you were
flying past and I bumped into you
in the Sky Milky Way Math Book Puddle Whatever
and you said "I shouldn't have"
while your lips and eyes said "Sing to me!"
and I sang "Yes you should have"
over and over again until I heard what I was saying
and ran like crazy because I never was allowed to
speak that language
and isn't this a crazy rainstorm, Kim?
and concentrate, now
I am there
I always have been
Feel the rain and let it wash
you to your roots
because sure you're a daisy
but you look so beautiful
spread across the sky,
lips pouting while you count your stars
concentrating
doing the math so carefully
making sure you get it right
feel the rain I am here
I am there
that is The Way it All Started
and if you were so accidentally inclined to believe
in magic
or math
or things better than chocolate
and you had to pick a time
(arbitrarily, of course)
you could pick now
and you could pick yesterday
and you could pick forever
and you could feel me
raining
storming like Love never knew
singing
like you asked
like you always deserved.
Like nothing, like forever, like
perennials
You and Me
year after year
day after day
century after century
Thing after Thing
after names for Things
all flowers
all stars
all You and Me.
I sing You the songs of Forever
like You have always asked
and that is the Way it All Started
if it ever had a Beginning.
