It is a simple process that shows if you have been infected with HIV ( human immunodeficiency virus)

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.

HIV is spread mainly by:
  • Having sex with a person infected with HIV
  • Sharing a needle or syringe with a person infected with HIV

HIV can also be spread by:
  • a mother infected with HIV to her baby before, during or after birth ( through breastfeeding).
  • Receiving infected blood. This is very unlikely today, since donors are carefully screened and all blood is tested before use.
