Questions you should be asking
at your child's school
Note- Your child's IEP will effect some of these question, please review it.
1) Does my child have an interpreter for every class period?

2) Does my child have an interpreter for the entire class period

3) How long has the interpreter worked for the school system?

4) How many periods a day does the interpreter work?

5) Is the interpreter certified?

6) How often, is the interpreters interpreting skills evaluated?

7) Is the evaluator at a higher skill level than the interpreter, what certification does he/she possess?

8) Is the Evaluator EIE certified?, if not, why not?

9) Does my child easily understand the interpreter?

10) Does my child have a note taker in class?

11) What is the Interpreter to student ratio at the school?

12) How many students require full time interpreting?

13) How often do interpreters and the Deaf Ed. teacher meet to discuss strategies for improving the quality of education for the students?

14) What happens if the interpreter is absent, is there a substitute?

15) Do the interpreters regularly attend workshop to improve their skills?

16) Are "Closed Captioning" televisions available in the classroom?

17) Are Interpreters pay scales in your county competitive with other counties.
